8 Ways to Feel Better about Yourself

We've been living through such a strange and difficult time the last few months and as lockdown starts to ease and hopefully life becomes a little more normal again, it is good to think about what we can do to give ourselves a little boost. Many of us have been desperate to get our hair cut or our nails done, and those simple actions can make you feel more confident and ready to face the world. But I've also been musing some other ideas of what we can do if we are feeling a bit flat right now and as if we need to start to feel better about ourself again.

So how about these ideas? -

1.  Have a day to yourself

If lockdown has meant you've been home with those you love 24/7 then you might just be desperate for some alone time. Now that more places are opening up and perhaps you can get out as you have a babysitter, why not consider a day shopping in your favourite town. Or maybe taking a very long walk in a local country park, seaside or forest. Pack a flash and a picnic if you still want to stay away from people, or it might be your idea of heaven to be able to have a good coffee al fresco outside your favourite cafe.

2.  Immerse yourself in Nature

Nature is very therapeutic and there have been lots of recent studies on the health benefits of people spending time outdoors and taking note of the nature around them. Shinrin-yoku (translated as “forest bathing”) is the Japanese art of being out amongst nature, in a forest or other green area and really taking notice of the sights, smells and sounds around you. As a Christian, I definitely see God in His creation and it is easy for me to connect with him as I walk our lakes where I live.

3.  Take up a new form of exercise

Exercise, chances are you either love it or hate it. Whichever it is, we all need to do it. It might just be a 30-minute walk that helps to raise our heart rate a little or maybe it is an hour spin class that test every part of you, but we all need to do it.

There are some great new ways to exercise nowadays, something for everyone. It might be gentle yoga or pilates, a full-on HIIT session or a les Mills class. Even if you don't fancy it before you start, you'll be feeling good for it once you complete your session.

4.  Laugh a lot!

They say laughter is the best medicine and I think they're right. I often watch TV shows like 'Live at the Apollo' or '8 our of 10 Cats' to I can laugh out loud. I've also been known to book for comedy shows or comedy club nights for my husbands birthday, so we can go together and I can have a good laugh too! I never fail to feel better about myself and my life after a good chuckle.

5.  Go for a Treatment

There are so many treatments out there nowadays and thankfully the lid is lifting and our beauty salons and clinics are able to open again. You might just fancy something simple like a massage or manicure, but equally, it might be the time for you to have a cosmetic procedure, like a brow lift or liposuction. It's definitely worth booking in with a reputable salon like Absolute Cosmetic Medicine Perth.

6.  Book a hotel for a great nights sleep

A good nights sleep makes the world of difference and if you're not getting good quality sleep at home, why not book into a beautiful hotel where you know they have luxurious beds and great bedding? Perhaps time away from the family is just what you need to give yourself permission to have a long and relaxing bath, go to bed at 8pm, enjoy room service and sleep in late too.

7.  Take up a new hobby

Maybe you are feeling stuck in a rut; life has become too much about work and obligations and that's not good for anybody. So, now could be the time to take up a new hobby. What have you always fancied doing but never made time for? Painting, photography, 5-a-side football? There are so many things you can do and an evening class if a great way to be introduced to a new hobby.

8.  Meet friends or family for a good chat

After having to stay away from people for so long, it feels like a privilege to now be able to spend time together again. There is so much to catch up on and share, so why not plan an outdoor meet up for a cuppa or in the pub garden?

There are so many simple things we can do to help ourselves feel a bit better at this difficult time. I hope you're feeling at ease and ready to come out of lockdown.
