10 Years of Employee Ownership (EO) Day – What We Have Learned

{This is a collaborative post}

It has been an entire decade since the Employee Ownership Association launched EO Day, or ‘Employee Ownership Day’, in celebration of the benefits of employee-owned businesses.

There are, of course, a lot of benefits to celebrate. It is clear that, within the UK, there are strong economic benefits being felt not just by the individual employees themselves, but by the business and regional economies. It’s also clear to see that employee ownership represents one of the cornerstones of preparing for a future of increased automation and using artificial intelligence to streamline significant portions of the UK workforce.

In all likelihood, businesses opting to spread ownership throughout the economy are something we should see a lot more of over the coming years. But, to that end, what has happened already?

Businesses are ready and willing to explore the benefits

Since 2019, the employee ownership sector has doubled – a fact which is testament to just how ready shareholders and directors are to spread ownership and reap the benefits of a workforce that have a much more significant stake in the business – and its growth – than they did before.

This has been aided by the formation of the Employee Ownership Trust, or EOT, first established in 2014. Recent research into employee ownership in SMEs has already paved the way for further studies into the true extent of the benefits brought by employee ownership.

Businesses that take on employee ownership are generally thought to be directed toward more meaningful roles and relationships

One of the strongest examples of this stems from the impact of Covid-19, which coincides with the rapid surge in companies turning toward employee ownership. As everyone was forced to confront their own mortality – and the impacts of a global crisis – more businesses and advisors sought to instate strong succession plans for their business, and to create a meaningful path forward not just for the business itself, but for its employees, too.

Employee ownership gives employees a more meaningful say in the business, which tends to have a strong impact on their levels of happiness and satisfaction at work.

The emphasis on nurturing the workforce is very strong

A recent survey showed that 96% of employee-owned businesses say that looking after the workforce is key to the success of the business, and more than two-thirds claimed that employee ownership was a matter of social responsibility.

Obviously, as with any significant change to the business, there will inevitably be a period of ‘settling in’ as everyone gets to grips with the new order. For that reason, and despite the strong rewards waiting for businesses who can navigate this process, working closely with corporate solicitors on setting up or running an employee-owned business can only help as they have worked with similar clients and know how to handle a change of this proportion.

There are, of course, a variety of ways to instate employee ownership within a business, but utilising the EOT has proven to be the most popular so far, and is well worth exploring if you’re interested in your employees having a stake in the future of your business.

How I Got Where I am Today: Finding Your Vocation

Thanks to my friend Eva for this image

I was browsing Twitter last week when a tweet from Donna at 'What the Redhead Said' caught my eye. She was responding to a tweet from a random American guy who said it was depressing that our society had failed to provide ambitious role models for our children and then he shared a graphic (which is pretty hilarious when you look at it closely) that apparently shows the top 10 jobs that kids want nowadays.

Put aside the fact that this guy had obviously made the graphic up, or at the very least not checked his sources very well as the jobs add up to nearly 137%, there are very random spelling mistakes and careers like teacher/ athlete are bundled together, what was interesting, was the backlash it had stirred in people, with him receiving over 7.000 responses, including Donna's.

It set me thinking about the job I do nowadays and how I came to this place. If you'd asked 17-year-old Michelle what she would be when she was grown up, it certainly wouldn't be a self-employed stay-at-home mum. The teen Michelle would have told you she was going to be a big success, running an empire, probably a hotel empire and that she wasn't ever going to have kids.

Being Self-Employed - Planning for all Eventualities

Photo by Corinne Kutz on Unsplash

{This is a collaborative post}

I became self-employed back in the Spring of 2013 and in many ways, I have never looked back. It provides me with the flexibility I never had when I was traditionally employed. As a mother with a growing family, it allows me the freedom to be there when the kids need or want me, to be able to volunteer for charities and my church and to just take an afternoon off if I fancy a walk in the hills with my husband.

There are so many advantages to being self-employed that I'd be hard-pressed to name them all, but there are also a few worries that come alongside it. Thankfully we live in a house that comes with my husband's job and this takes away some of the financial pressure that we used to face when we had a mortgage, utility bills and council tax to cover.

I've happily gone along over the last few years, enjoying our lifestyle and spending the money I earnt on family holidays, meals out and some nice treats for the kids, but the events of the last year have really made me think about how protected we are as a family for all eventualities. Of course, our faith is in Jesus as we are Christians but we're told in the bible to have faith and also to take steps forward and to do the footwork.

So, recently I've been looking at our family's finances and the plans we have in place for if the worst was to happen. The areas I have been reviewing are -

Income Protection Insurance

If I was to fall ill or get injured and we lost my self-employed income we'd certainly feel it as a family. Thankfully we'd still be able to pay our bills and eat but our lifestyle would rapidly deteriorate as the girls wouldn't be able to have their trendy trainers, our odd takeaway would be a thing of the past and our holidays would be in our own home.

Once we move out of our current home and we either buy or rent a property again, then my becoming ill and the loss of my income would probably have a far more detrimental impact and we may find ourselves not being able to pay the bare essentials like the gas bill, or having enough to buy food. That kind of situation doesn't bear thinking about and to be honest, I don't need to as I could ensure that even if I fell ill or got badly injured we could still have a similar amount of money coming in each month if we take out income protection insurance.

Income protection insurance will usually pay out between 50% and 70% - and the cost of a policy depends on your age, job, your health and lifestyle and the percentage of income you’d like to cover.  When self-employed and taking out an income protection policy, your monthly income is based on your share of the pre-tax profits generated by your business.

Should you study A Level Law, if you want to take a Law Degree?

Photo by Giammarco Boscaro on Unsplash

{Collaborative Post}

I can hardly believe I have a 16-year-old son; time really does pass very quickly. We’ve just done the rounds of the local colleges for him to choose where he wants to go on to next and I realise we are very lucky as he made a decision quickly and feels sure of the courses he wants to do.

JJ has always been academic and the STEM subjects come easily to him, so it was no surprise when he put his application in for Maths, Further Maths, Computer Science and Law. We’re not sure if he’ll be taking three or four A levels as yet, this will be decided at his college interview in December.

I was keen for him to do four. I think it was just so I could be a proud mum, with a really bright son. However, when we did some investigating, it turns out that all the uni’s only look for results in three subjects, and they’d far rather the applicant had three seriously good results than four OK ones. We then noticed that where Further Maths is taken the college normally advocate a fourth subject, so we’ll just see what the college says and take their advice, they have done this many more times than us.

Reasons to be Cheerful - Great First Week!

Loving this photo from our visit last week to NT East Riddlesden Hall. I think Miss M looks
like a winner up there and I feel like a winner at the moment!

It's the weekend, Yay!  We've not got anything planned and I'm quite happy with that. My parents arrive on Monday for a week, so I'm sure next week will be a busy one with plenty going on.

This week I started my new job with Spring Harvest and it has been great. Here are a few reasons why I'm feeling cheery about my new job -
  • Not only is my job share partner very nice, she also seems efficient and capable. Things that are super important to me!
  • I'm part of a great team, really diverse and I think we'll have fun.
  • I'll be helping to organise the big Christian Spring Harvest breaks that I've been going to for the last 14 years, I feel very privileged to be a part of the organisation now, and the work seems interesting.
  • Each week we have prayers and it was good to join with everyone to pray for both work and personal situations.

Jobs that are Ideal for Stay-at-Home Mums

{Collaborative Post}

There are many jobs that stay-at-home mums can do, but sometimes it is easy to forget that many of the skills we have can be useful to other people. We’ve been so wrapped up in caring for our children for many years that we’ve forgotten we are capable of much more.  It can be great for stay-at-home mums to be able to run a business that fits in with caring for the family, and there are many opportunities for us to do this. Here are a few ideas -

Seamstress
Being good with a needle and thread is a skill that many women envy. If you are good at making or altering clothes there will always be a demand for your services. You can do the jobs while the children are at school or in bed and the only thing you may have to watch is that you do not take on more work than you can cope with alongside your family duties. It only takes a few friends to pass the word around, and you will wonder where all the sewing suddenly appears from.

Pilates Instructor
Pilates is more popular than it has ever been and the number of people who want to attend classes is increasing all the time. More people wanting to take part means more instructors are needed and with classes held while the kids are in school, this could be a great way to earn some extra cash.

If you want to become a Pilates instructor you will need to get a level 2 fitness qualification. This may seem like a barrier initially, but it is worth the time and money investment as you can then work at the local gym or set up private classes of your own.

A Week of Reasons to be Cheerful

Home sweet home and the sun is shining!

It's time for our weekly dose of cheerfulness and I am feeling a lot more like myself than I did last week. Sadly my lovely aunt passed away, so I'll be heading to her funeral on Tuesday but I'm so thankful she is no longer in loads of pain.

Here's my week of cheer -

Thursday - I had a good session with the little boy I coach through the charity TLG. Then in the evening I headed to Tesco whilst my girls were at Guides and I got a new coat for the Spring. It is raspberry coloured and I love it.

Friday - We headed out for a meal for my friend Annie's birthday and the food was exquisite. I had a chicken breast stuffed with spiced lamb and spinach and coated in a mild curry sauce with pomegranate seeds, sultanas and sunflower seeds.

What’s for the best? Only God knows the answer…

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Colossians 3:23 (NLT)

September – the kids go back to school and routine is resumed but this year it’s a time of change, I can feel it. Not for the whole family, I’m not foreseeing any big moves or shifts in our lives but just time for me to find a way to make the most of my skills. We’ve been in East Sussex for just over three years now and whilst I’m very settled here and quite content to stay for as long as the Lord calls us I’m also yearning for something else, to use my talents more fully, for some fulfilment. To work for God.

I’m continuing my voluntary work with the Hastings food bank as I enjoy that and I know it makes a difference to many lives but to be honest I’d stop if I felt there was a more permanent job I should be doing. I’m also starting a new voluntary role with the education charity TLG (transforming lives for good) followand that means I’ll give an hour a week for the next academic year to a little boy to ensure he feels nurtured and cared for at school. This is a definite, so I won’t be changing that as you can’t make a commitment to a vulnerable child and then back out,

For the last few years I’ve been volunteering in the Welcome Team and managing the Facebook page of the Christian Conference centre, where I live. It has been an absolute privilege to serve alongside the committed team at Ashburnham Place and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it but there doesn’t appear to be any kind of paid or ongoing role for me there and I need to find an ongoing role. My heart is yearning for stability, challenge and the satisfaction of a full day’s work. I’ll still give time to Ash (as I fondly call it) and I can’t help but to be part of the community loving and nurturing all our young volunteers that come to live with us for 3-12 months but I won’t be such a regular sight in the office.

One thing I know for sure is that I don’t want to go back to full-time permanent work outside of the home. My kids all tell me they adore me being home (even if some of their reasoning is a bit skewed – who would do the cleaning if you weren’t here Mum?) and I like the freedom to be able to pick them up, take them to the lake swimming or help with their homework but I’m definitely open to a part-time job. One that will allow me to be around most of the time.

I’m considering temp work, or something like admin or reception is a local business. Without sounding boastful I have so many organisational skills I could offer to a small business. I don’t need a fancy title, or tons of money. I just want to help, enjoy my work and know that I am making a difference. It’s not easy to find the right role though as many a mother wants work a few days a week around school hours.

I’ve seen a couple of jobs that are home-based and I could easily do them and enjoy them but then I wonder do I really want to work 15 hours a week for £150 when I could do one or two sponsored blog posts in a few hours and earn the same? But truthfully I’m not even sure why I’m worrying about the money as that is just a nice sideline of working. One that could perhaps pay for the abroad holiday next year that we now all desire, having been to Spain this year.

Would working in my own home give me that same sense of achievement and connection that I feel when I work outside of the home? I’m really not sure it would. I like the interaction of having people around me and bouncing ideas off them. There have been too many times when the Internet has felt like a very lonely place and it is full of comparison and you have to be pretty self-confident to be able to ride out the storm sometimes.

So when the kids go back to school on Wednesday I’m going to take a few hours in the prayer centre to pray and seek the Lord to see what He wants for me. I am after all, just a servant but please God I pray, show me the way. Help me to see what steps I should be taking this year. Where do you want me to serve?

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

I don't know how I did it....

Loving time to spend with these nutters!

Most days I find this going through my head, I am amazed really. How on earth did I use to work, volunteer and look after my family and home? Now I’m not working outside the home it completely baffles me, I can see why I used to look tired and withered most of the time.

Here I am now with loads of time on my hands and still I don’t sit around and twiddle my thumbs, in fact I’d like a few more hours in a day. I suppose it is a change of priorities and activities rather than having stopped. Things before which had to be pushed to the side can now be undertaken.

It gives me an immense amount of satisfaction now to be able to do reading, times tables, spelling and homework with the kids every day. Before I struggled to do it twice a week. I tried to push the guilt away, who did it help if I felt bad that I was not doing enough educational things with the kids but realistically in the short time we have been here Miss E has made really great progress with her reading, something she struggles so much with. When I see that progress I know it is totally right than I am not working right now.

The smallest things gives me joy at the moment, like the fact I’m able to use up those plums that have not ripened. Before they would have ended up in the bin as there was no time for anything else but now I can use Maggy’s recipe and enjoy plum cake with custard. We can have roast dinners on week days, I can make curry from scratch and hot puddings come from the oven not a shop-bought container. Never has so much flour, eggs, butter and sugar been used in my house!

I have an immense respect for working parents, having done it for 10 years myself I know it is hard work and right now I’m blessed to be trying something different out. I felt the benefit of not working this week when late Sunday afternoon Miss M broke her elbow. As I spoke to dh on the phone as we waited in our local A&E all I could say was thank God I can just stay home with her and not worry. If we had been back in Hertfordshire one or the other of us would have felt compromised trying to sort out work around caring for our babe.

I understand I’m really blessed to have been able to make this decision, not everyone can. I have a husband who understands this is right at present and we have agreed that we will make financial sacrifices to be able to do this - plans for future abroad holidays and large purchases are gone but for us we really are feeling a difference in our quality of life.

For sure I’d urge anyone to seriously consider giving up work and spending some time at home to really be with your kids and to be able to feel as if you are on top of things. Turn back the clock and never would I or anyone who knew me say that I’d ever suit being a stay at home mum but we’d all have been wrong. For now it feels good and that’s enough for me.

#R2BC - Week 43 - Lucky to have my Job!

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

Good morning, I hope this Thursday is a good one for you.  As you read this I'm at work all day running a training workshop, I pray this goes well and all my international students who are supposed to help me turn up!

My whole reasons to be cheerful post this week is based around work. I know I am blessed to have a good job with an exceptional manager.  Some others can not say the same, even those working at the same place as me.

So what is making me super cheery at work then?
  1. Blogging and social media have become a real passion for me in the last couple of years, I did not even realise how much so until yesterday when I was asked at work to start researching and putting together a short introduction to social media course, with the aim being that our researchers can start to publicise some of their articles and findings. I am chomping at the bit to get started with this.
  2. I have so many interesting projects going on at the moment that I am not really sure where to start!
  3. I love the flexibility of my work, they have allowed me two weeks off unpaid so I could take my blogger trips to Ethiopia and then to Belarus when I do in December.
  4. The people in my direct team are just awesome, we are all different but together there is a bit of everything and we all support each other, it is amazing to know that if anything goes wrong I can turn to them.
  5. But best of all?  I'm off most of next week to spend time with my family.
Over to you. Share with us what is making you feel happy/ grateful right now. Link your blog post up, pop the blog hop code in if you fancy and then visit some others in the linky and leave some comment love.  I'll aim to come and visit everyone this week and comment, so please leave me some love too.

Have a really great week, Mich x

Are you a Mum looking for work?

For me life is all about balance, even the best things can become too much when taken to extreme, so whilst I love to be home with my kids, to play with them, nurture them and just enjoy our time together I have a complete fear of being home all the time.

Luckily when I changed jobs after JJ was born nearly 9 years ago I was extremely fortunate to find a part-time job with a public-sector employer.  In the time I have been there I have been able to change my hours and job role a number of times and all within the same department.  My salary has nearly doubled and I still only work 22 hours a week but in a job that challenges and excites me.  Yes I am indeed one of the fortunate ones.
There is no reason why you cannot be one of the fortunate ones too, perhaps you have heard of a useful website called Workingmums.co.uk?  All in one place you can easily find vacancies across the UK that are being targeted towards Mums. Don’t you think that is fabulous? No more discrimination when a potential employer spots the child raising career gap on your CV and no more uncomfortable questions at interview when they realise you have three pre-schoolers.

The employers engaging with the Working Mums site are reputable, brands like John Lewis, HSBC and T Mobile, they know the value of employing Mums and understand that those of us who work part-time tend to work smarter and harder as we have to fit everything we do into a limited time-frame.
I had a good explore of the Working Mums site and was pleased to see loads of part-time and homeworking jobs but also full-time ones too for those Mums who require more hours. It was interesting to note that there are even paid market research opportunities available for those Mums who want to just earn a nominal income each month.

Having working in HR and recruitment for the last 14 years I know that no two Mums are the same, every person wants something slightly different to suit their own personal situation. It has also been apparent to me over the years just how many women lose their confidence after having children or feel they have nothing to put on a CV anymore but this site has a wealth of information on CV writing, interview tactics and tips on how to work flexibly and best of all - it is all free advice, easily available at any time of day.
However not everyone wants to be employed and if you are interested to work for yourself then there are some super franchise opportunities available as well. There were lots of well-known names that I recognised like Tatty Bumpkins, Merry Maids and Families magazine – all looking for new franchisees to join their success. Not only that, there is also a resource area in the franchise zone where you can read articles around writing a business plan, how to research a franchise and lots more.  You can even post a question for Tom Endean, the Marketing Manager of the British Franchise Association, I think that is a very valuable resource to tap into.

In short the Working Mums site appears to be a great resource for women looking to get back into the work place or just changing roles or even starting a franchise. Part of my paid work is to help advise and coach people when they are facing redundancy and I will certainly recommend they visit Working Mums if appropriate.

Reasons to be Cheerful - Week 17

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

I have struggled this week to know what to write for my Reasons to be Cheerful post, not because I am not happy but just no inspiration has come to me for a theme and I do not have any pressing major reasons.

I pondered taking something that really has the potential to get me down and turning it aorund, doing my Pollyanna bit and being glad in every situation.  The thing that came to mind instantly was the rain, I have to say I am really fed up so it.  So I spent some time trying to turn it around and be glad for it and all I could come up with was this -

#R2BC - Week 10, Snuggles, Blog Makeover and Spring

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

Happy Thursday!  How are you today?

Short and sweet, here are the things making me cheerful right now -
  1. I ran my first solo development workshop on Tuesday and it went well.  The participants seemed happy and I felt content, so I'll just await the evaluations for the final comments.
  2. The superb Liz at Violet Posy is redesigning my blog at the moment.  The big reveal won't be until some time in April but I am excited, the snippets I have seen so far are good.  It all feels a bit scary but good scary!
  3. Dh has been away for a couple of days and I missed him, it was nice to have him back in my bed last night.
  4. I am looking forward to a chilled weekend - nothing on Saturday (well actually Miss E and I have a date with the play doh) and then off to Duxford air museum with the Cubs on Sunday and maybe I'll talk dh into a nice dinner somewhere on the way home!
  5. I am loving the relationship my little ladies have with each other at the moment, just look at them -

I also asked the kids what was making them cheerful right now and here is what they said -
  1. JJ - A great night at Cubs, we played some wicked games.
  2. Miss E - my new glitter glue pens, 'I can make you a pretty picture Mummy'.
  3. Miss M - Popcorn and snuggles with you Mummy.
and finally from dh, his gut response to my question of what has made him cheerful today - 'coming home'.  Great minds think alike. He then pondered some more and decided it was because spring was on its way and he had some extra helpers at cubs.

Over to you.  It is that same questions as always.  What is making you feel cheerful/ grateful at the moment?  Write a post and link up.  Leave some comment love here and I'll be sure to come visit you.  Leave some comment love on some of the other blogs and brighten someones day.  Last week we were back to our hardcore members after all the joiners in Jan/ Feb, we'll see what this week holds.  Don't forget to tweet your posts with #R2BC and I'll try and RT all tweets this week.

Enjoy your weekends, Be blessed.  Mich x

Reasons to be Cheerful - Week 51 #R2BC

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

Not long now folks - both to the anniversary of #R2BC and to Christmas and a brand new year.  It is going to be an exciting couple of weeks....

So what is making me cheerful this week?  Quite a few things really, read on....
  1. You know I had an interview last Thursday? Well I got the job and I should start at the beginning of February, so that is very exciting.  It is still at my current workplace and I am situated in the same office but with a new team and I will mostly be out training now.
  2. After posting about feeling very down earlier this week I have received loads of calls, emails, tweets and comments from friends old and new wanting to let me know I have their support.  Thanks so much. As per always getting the fact that I feel down out in the open has helped loads and the last couple of days I have felt so much better.
  3. I finished work today and do not go back until 3rd January.  I think this break will be so precious to me and the time with my family will make a massive difference to how I have been feeling.
  4. Our Christmas will be very low key and just the 5 of us.  Originally my family were coming on Boxing Day but my Dad's car has broken and they cannot find a hire car so this now means we will have Christmas and Boxing Day with just us 5 and in true Polyanna style I am turning this sad thing into something good and it means we will all have to relax and play together.  I shopped tonight and have not gone overboard at all, so there will be no cupboards full of goodies to empty when dh and I start the diet after Christmas.
  5. We will not get to go and visit my parents at their house on the 27th Dec and I'll look forward to that.
  6. We had a fabulous little party for the kids on Monday when I was off work.  6 Mums got together and put in £14.50 each and we had a full packed 4 hours fun in a hired hall. It was superb and so much better than buying lots of cheap presents for the kids, we all got to spend time together.
  7. I have started to receive some great offers of giveaway prizes ready for the grand #R2BC anniversary giveaway which will go live on Thursday 19th January. I have 8 prizes promised so far....  watch this space!
I could actually keep going, but 7 has to be enough really!  Over to you.  How is life treating you?  Surely you must have some reasons to be cheerful right now?  Kick off your shoes, relax and forget the hustle bustle of getting ready for Christmas.  Count your blessings now!

If I do not catch you before I wish you a blessed Christmas and I hope 2012 is a special year for you.

Reasons to be Cheerful 1, 2, 3 - Week 50

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

Oh wow, week 50, that means we are only 2 weeks off this linky having been running for a year!  Isn't that fab? When I started this I committed to keep it going for a year and I can't believe how time has flown by...  I am hoping to have a nice little bundle of goodies for you as a Reasons to be Cheerful 1st anniversary giveaway, because it will keep going and who knows we may even hit a 2nd anniversary.

The #R2BC launch week saw 39 people join up and share their joyful reasons and the number of bloggers joining in continued around that mark with a peek at week 5 with 45 people joining in.  In more recent times we have become a select group with about 20 people linking up and now in the busy run up to Christmas we seem to have shrunk to 8....  but what a fab group of 8 we are! I wonder if I will be all alone this week and next?   Nah, I have faith, there are a few of you who will keep me company come rain or shine!

This week I am going back to basics and am just simply posting my reasons to be cheerful 1, 2, 3.  Here they are -
  1. By the time you read this I probably will have had my interview for a new job at my existing work.  I have to do a 15 minute presentation and have a panel interview so to say I am a tad nervous is very true! The wobble I had when I called dh at work on Wednesday was no fun.
  2. To celebrate the interview being over work has laid on a large party for me, yes honestly just for me.  Not for the other couple of thousand of people who work there!  It should be a great night; free food, great music, dancing with friends   I have a lovely dress and I really intend to enjoy myself and all without an ounce of alcohol.
  3. I am grateful for good friends with great ideas.  Instead of my girls buying their little friends a token gift this Christmas six Mums are coming together to organise a 4 hour party on Monday.  We are having loads of crafts, games (pin the nose on the snowman, pass the parcel etc), dancing and party food.  The twelve 4 year olds that will attend will have an absolute ball and this may be something we do every year and all for about £10 per parent.  Fab, hey?
So there you go, simple.  They are the 3 main reasons for me to feel cheerful this week.  Of course Christmas being only 10 days away and me only having 2 more days to work before Christmas are just aside factors and are not really making me that cheerful at all, yeah right!

Over to you - write your cheerful, happy, joyous or gratitude post and link up.  Visit the others who link up and share some Christmas cheer.  Don't forget to tweet about your post and use the #R2BC hashtag and if you are new to Reasons to be Cheerful then take a look HERE and read a bit more about where this linky came from.

Thanks all, love you.  Mich x

Do I want to Work Full-Time?

Things are changing at work, my boss of the last few years is leaving and I am now at the point where I am thinking 'do I want her job?'  I easily know the answer to that - yes I do. I have never made a secret of the fact that this was the job I fancied, it is one I have done before in other industries and call me big-headed but I think I would be pretty good at it.

(Now if you are reading this and you work at the same place as me, do not assume that I know any more than you, I am purely surmising about her job being up for grabs).

I started with my current employer just over 7 years ago and I have always been upfront and told my manager that the job I wanted was hers but for me it comes with a cost.  I am pretty sure that my Director of HR will not consider anything except full-time in that role.  Yes I could put forward for a job-share as I work now but I would need someone to share with me that I could really trust. Who knows if I would find them at that level.

So the question I am left with is 'do I want to work full-time?'  No, is my instant reaction, I am loving my balance of part-time working now the kids are at school.  Two school days to myself to get all the jobs done and some time to myself to exercise, blog, get my hair cut or even just visit the doctor without 3 parrots accompanying me.

Is an extra £23K a year worth me having to work full-time, not having a moment to myself and putting all 3 kids into childcare before and after school for five days a week.  My gut reaction was that I would not be that much better off financially and why would I do it? I felt I ought to crunch and numbers and see how it came out, childcare would be about £900 a month on a normal month and then do not even ask in the school holidays.  Over £5500 a year on childcare was what I calculated, sounds a lot doesn't it?  Even after this and the increase in tax/ NI etc I realised that I would in actual fact take home an extra £800 a month after the childcare, that's not too bad is it? About £10.80 an hour for the additional 18.5 hours per week I'd do  That could probably buy me the new kitchen that I am desiring, a couple of good abroad holidays a year or some serious spending each month.

But it comes back down to the basics - is this what I want?  To get home at 5.30pm at night and then to have to deal with 3 tired kids that have been in care since 8am that morning, to have to cook dinner or feel bad that we are eating ready food, to wash and iron in the evening, to clean on the weekends, to be grouchy with my kids when they ask to play a game with me as I have too many chores to do. Would I have to hire a cleaner, gardener?  Tell, me how do people cope with the daily stuff of life when both parents work full-time and you have young kids.  Do the chores just slip?  The other day I left work at 4.30pm (so pretty early), dh was at work until late so I picked the kids up and then did tea, baths, time with each of the kids reading or playing and I did the normal chores, washing, clean up kitchen, load dishwasher etc.  You know, just the normal and it was 8.55pm before I sat down for my time.  That really did not feel like a life I would choose to lead each day.

Surely I would miss out on the simple stuff?  When would I have the chance to capture simple moments like JJ watching the frog bounce around outside.  Like the girls running in the playground before school or decorating cakes after school.

Looking at this and thinking it thorough has been a good exercise for me.  It has showed me how little money means to me.  I have decided that even if this job was an extra £30per hour I would not go for it.  Nothing will take away my time with my children while they are small.  The girls are just 4 and JJ and is 8 and I like to help them with their homework after school, to chat to them about their day on the leisurely scoot or walk home and to drop into the park with friends on a sunny day.  Big earnings will not make me a better parent and I am glad I can see that.

Luckily I have a very sensible dh and we got on the property ladder fairly early and did not over extend ourselves, so we have no big 4 bedroom detached house to pay for and thus we can choose to live moderately and to enjoy our time together even if we do have a busted front door and a 30 year old kitchen.  Do the kids think about these things?  No, not at all.  When they are older and think back to their childhood at home I hope they will remember baking in the kitchen,  junk modelling in the dining room and playing games with Mummy and Daddy. Far more valuable memories than the after school club can provide each day.  Now if my Mum and Dad lived locally it all could be a different story...

Just to say, do not think I am judging anyone, we all do what suits us and our families.

If you work full-time do let me in on your secret, how do you keep a balance and where do you get the time from to sort the house stuff?

Reasons to be Cheerful - Week 37

Morning cheerful ones!

This week we are being hosted by Ems over in Cyprus, so pop on over and see her at A Matter of Choice.  Link up your happy post there and leave her some comment love.  Thanks go to Bod for Tea who did a super job of hosting last week and even managed to attract some male attention to #R2BC - you go girl!

  1. So this weeks top news for me being happy is that I have returned to work after my secondment.  One way or another I manged to have most of the summer off, which was very welcome but I have actually enjoyed being in for my 3 days this week.  I have some great colleagues that I work with and it was nice to be back and realise that I have remembered how to do most things!
  2. We are having carpet laid today.  After the moth debacle (which I must blog about) we are finally having some carpets go back down upstairs.  So by tomorrow Miss E's room will be complete.  I am then decorating over the next couple of weeks and then the other two bedrooms will be done too.  JJ has moved downstairs and the twinnies have a room each, it is all going well on the home front.
  3. Family time at the weekend, we tried out a super new church, very small but really personal and I have not seen dh that comfortable with strangers for a very long time. Our country Police HQ also had an open day and the kids were in their element especially JJ, he is already trying to sign up as a cadet, only a 5 year wait JJ!
  4. I am getting some time to myself.  With the girls being at school full-time I have 2 school days a week to myself.  I have re-joined the gym, made some overdue appointments and contacted friends to arrange some coffees! Let the good times roll...
  5. School settling in is going really well for my girls.  They tell me they love it and whilst they are very tired by bed time they seem to be coping brilliantly.  Mummy is very proud of you little ladies.
Every day the girls run into school excited, long may this last!

So I expect you know the protocol by now, write a cherry post, link it up and go and visit some other blogs on the linky. In fact go and visit all the other blogs on the linky, it is always fab to find some new reading material.  Leave me some comment love and I'll come and do the same for you. Check out here if you are new to #R2BC and want to read the full low down.

Thanks for joining in, you rock!  Mich x

Reasons to be Cheerful #R2BC

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

Hello all, How are you?  Did you miss me last week?  OK, don't answer I am not sure I can take the rejection! lol  Thanks so much to the fabulous Fay at Glass Half Full for hosting last week.

That was the first week I have missed from #R2BC since I started it back in January.  Now I am on a par with @seasiderclare who has only ever missed one week too.  Do you think I ought to give her a prize at the end of the year if she keeps up this great work?

Talking of Clare, she is hosting #R2BC this week so you need to pop over and see her to link up.  Please leave her some comment love when you link up, it is nice to get something back when you are being the host.

So what about me?  What is making me cheery this week?
  1. How about lack of work? I have no idea how this has come about as it was not planned but between 3rd August and 11th September I will only have worked 2 days and actually they were over yesterday. So now I am free until 12th September when I return to my old job as my secondment has finished and you know what?  I am looking forward to that.
  2. We had the most amazing holiday last week to Dorset, my parents came too and we all agreed that it was a blast!  Here is to the same next year....

  3. Dh and I had a meeting yesterday with social services as we are considering fostering. We have thought about this for a number of years now and as the girls are starting full time school this feels like a good time. Wish us luck...
  4. It is Dh's birthday today and we are deciding what we will do, a day at the beach? the zoo? Who knows but we will certainly have some fun (and it will be on Tesco vouchers!)
  5. I have just sent off more Tesco vouchers in exchange for a weekend away in October for JJ's birthday. We will be heading off to a caravan park and bopping away at the kids disco with our pop and crisps - we know how to live! I have even suggested to dh that we take our nephew who is the same age as JJ. I think two 7/8 year olds would think that was a pretty amazing birthday treat - don't you?
I have so much I am thankful for and every time I remember that fact I am blessed.  It would be so easy to sit back at the moment and wallow in the fact that there is so much that needs doing in our house, we have no carpets upstairs, JJ is on a mattress on the floor, the front door is still broken etc etc but actually we have shelter, family, food and fun in our lives.......  need we more?

That's it, write your post, head over to Clare's link up and then visit others and share some love. That is one of the things I like best about #R2BC, we all support each other and visit.  I will be sure to visit you all this week as I am home.

Love Mich xx

Reasons to be Cheerful 1,2,3 - Week 14

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy with a Heart

Good evening all. I hope you are feeling cheerful this week.  If where you live has been anything like here then how can this beautiful sunshine fail to make you feel just a little brighter?

Lets dive straight in....  this weeks reasons to be cheerful are -

    1. Work.  I had to make 2 big presentations this week in my new job and they went well. I received comments and emails from senior people about how well I did, so that is super!
    2. I am a guest blogger today! Posting over on Maternity Matters.  Have you visited this site yet?  It has been set up by @Susurem and @Jaynecrammond as a resource for mothers who have experienced birth trauma, it is fully inclusive and will offer guest posts around all parenting topics. Today I have a 2 part post over there about what it means to be a Christian parent in a secular world.  If you fancy going over and sharing some comment love I'd really appreciate that.
    3. I got loads of housework done today and I did not even mind doing it.  The girls helped me make beds, empty bins, dust etc and they think it is fab - long may that last!  I am trying to get things all organised at home ready for next week, because...
    4. We are going to Spring Harvest!  This is a massive Christian festival held at Butlins and it is the highlight of my year, we have such an amazing time.  I pray to feel completely relaxed by the time I return home, I normally do.  I will be taking my laptop with me so I can plan the future program for creche.  I only plan to go on-line every other day for a maximum of an hour, so expect posts/ tweets etc to be much more sparse than normal and guess what else?  My lovely brother asked if could use the house while we are away and I said only if he fits some new lights for us!  So when we return things will be looking all glam in the living room!
What about you, what has brightened your week this week?

Last week I asked if you wanted to see any changes to R2BC and the overwhelming response was no, you like it just the way it is.  So I will change nada!

Another question for you, please let me know...

I have been struggling to get to every post and comment every week.  It really is my desire to do that but you know what things are like... life and kids get in the way!  What I wondered was if you expect me (as the host) to comment on each post you link up?  I realise it is polite and nice etiquette but of course I also know that some hosts don't and that's not an issue to me but I wondered if it was an issue to you?

It was suggested to me today that what I could do was RT your tweet, perhaps with a comment added about your post as a thank you for joining in.  Of course this is good for you too, as RT's from those with a fairly good Klout score, helps your own Klout score.  It means you would have to remember to use the #R2BC hashtag so I can find your tweets though.

So how does that sound, some weeks I'll comment on the blog and others I'll RT posts.  Would you be happy with that?

Do be honest with me, you know you can be.

Have a great week, Mich xx
