Falling in love with nature - Fabulous fungi

This is a post purely for me, as I'd like somewhere to visually record all the wonderful fungi I have found in East Sussex this late summer/ Autumn. It baffles me that I have fallen so in love with nature this year but God speaks through creation and it was obviously time that I opened my eyes and started to rejoice in this awesome earth that He created.

I have no idea what is edible and what is poisonous and to be honest I think it is too much of a gamble to pick mushrooms anyway, so I'll just continue to admire them from afar and love all the different species that I have been finding. If you do know what some of them are then by all means leave me a comment and I'll become more educated alongside enjoying their beauty.

So I think this is the Chicken of the woods and I was amazed at fast it grows!

These appear to be the poisonous Fly Agaric -

No idea about this tan coloured one -

My favourite by a long shot, have you ever seen a fungi look like this? A shaggy ink cap maybe? I believe the one on the left is the same as the other and that is morphs and decomposes pretty quickly.

This could be a Birch Polypore?

I think this next one is such an elegant fungi but again no idea what it is -

All four of these found in a wet area near the lake, all in close proximity but I think they are all different -

And am I right in thinking this is the same mushroom, but just at different stages of its life?

And at the risk of boring anyone looking at this, this is the last one I'll add (although I have tons more, mushrooms really have gripped me this year!)

So there we go, fungi fetish over for a while. I go photograph some clouds instead and now I have my new camera I can get much better photos in the future.

Breakfast with Santa - 18 sleeps to go...

Yesterday we all headed to our local garden centre to have breakfast with Santa. This isn't something I had heard of before and it really appealed to me. The girls obviously still love to visit Santa (being only 6) but truth be told it is not that engaging for the rest of us. However, add in a full English breakfast and all of a sudden we are interested.

At our old house we always visited a garden centre on Christmas Eve to see Santa and then we would have a fry-up in the local cafe, as we have now moved and the old option is not feasible any longer, this is a wonderful alternative for us.

I'll let the photos do most of the talking as they really do speak a thousand words -

We arrived at the cafe to find the tables decorated for those who had booked. Crackers, hats, colouring packs and a candy cane each awaited the kids. The kids can enjoy as much squash as they fancy and we had a hot drink each (included in the price).

The food was really excellent, a good clean presentation and quality products. A big thumbs up!

Once breakfast was finished the manger started to whip the kids up into a frenzy, by chatting about Santa and jingling bells (which apparently Santa left last year) and he got the kids and adults all shouted for Santa to arrive with us.

The children were all invited up to choose a present with Santa, from oldest to youngest. Someone picked the cuddly dog that JJ fancies the staff went out of their way to find him one too.

Once the kids had their presents and our food was all finished, we assumed it would be time to go but it was a fantastic surprise to find that each of our children got given a really good sized gingerbread man, a little bag of icing and some decorations . They had the choice to decorate them there or take them home.

I think you can see that we all had a super time. The garden centre we visited was in Hastings and is fairly small but it was excellent. The Manager was at the front greeting everyone and telling them about the 25% off Christmas decorations promotion on that weekend, the manger in the cafe was welcoming, the food was exceptionally good (and we will be going back for sure), the toys that the children received were appropriate and fun to play with and I loved the fact I could take pictures of the kids with Santa for no extra cost.

This really was good old fashioned and down to earth fun. It was not big and glitzy but it really worked and at £9.99 per child and £7.99 per adult it was great value for this time of the year.

There are 139 garden centres within the Garden Centre Group and many of them are offering breakfast with Santa and there is a tea with Santa option too. I'd recommend this to anyone, we had such a super time.

I was pleased to find that there was a really good stock of Christmas decorations and seasonal gifts too.

Disclosure: We received this experience free of charge for the purpose of this review. I have not been instructed what to write and I remain honest.

My picture: His words - Preparation

I have to be honest and say that never did I think I would be showing you a picture of a dumper truck full of mud here on the blog but when I was on one of my walks last week around the estate here I felt compelled to go over and photograph it.

It really seemed to signify to me that it is important to put in the ground work and to prepare ready for what will come. In this case it is a large vegetable plot being made ready for the next crop to be planted but I sense for me this was twofold, one was that God knows the hard work we put in and He appreciates our efforts and the other was that I need to prepare for when He comes again. I have the song 'Prepare ye the way of the Lord' whizzing round my head as I write this.

I'm trying to figure out what 'preparing myself for when He comes again' actually looks like but I'll pray on it and I know He will reveal all in His perfect time.

Wishing you a blessed week. Please do link up if you feel you have something to share.  Mich x

Cliff walking fun at Beachy Head #Countrykids

I've been off radar with my Country Kids posts of late, not because we haven't been out and about enjoying the great outdoors but because I've been trying to have a rest and not be so tied to blogging. And its worked, I've actually still blogged a fair amount but a lot of it was meeting commitments I had made and now I feel fresh and ready to take on Christmas.

Last weekend we headed to Eastbourne, to Beachy Head to be precise and the kids were all 'do we have to?', 'It's too cold?', 'Who wants to walk on a cliff?' etc etc and then just as dh and I predicted they had a whale of a time and want to go back again, I don't think it was anything to do with the ice cream sundae we finished the afternoon off with either!

Beachy Head really is a beautiful spot and I fully advocate taking your children there and exploring, the views are amazing and you can go on both the beach and cliff areas. We saved the beach for next time...

Nelson, may you rest in peace brother

I had a chat with the kids tonight about the passing of Nelson Mandela and like whenever Miss E hears about someone dying she gets very sad. I had to remind her that Nelson is now in the best place ever and he is reunited with Jesus.

Nelson Mandela was a man who inspired a generation and showed us that average and ordinary people can make a difference. It won't always be easy and it won't always be fun but it will be worth it.

I love that quote above from Nelson, there are so many I could have chosen as he spoke such sense during his 95 years here on earth but this one sits really well with me. You'll know that I am a supporter of the ONE Campaign and I think they embody this - they have vision and they take action and one day we really will see the end to extreme poverty, I feel sure of it.

I've added in a clip of Nelson speaking in Britain back in 2005 as part of the Make Poverty History campaign and I think it is important to acknowledge there has been progress but there is still so much further to go.

I'd urge you to visit ONE and to sign up to offer your support and voice in the fight against extreme poverty.  You don't have to give any money and you don't have to do anything you don't want to. Every small action makes a difference - 1 signature on a petition, 1 tweet, 1 share on Facebook, 1 letter to an MP or one conversation with your coffee group - we all have different ways and we can all help.  But please add your email so ONE can keep you up to date with what is going on and what needs our most urgent support.

Thanks for your time, Mich x

Grace in small things

Right now I'm over flowing with gratitude, how can I not be when I am so lucky to be saved and to see God's grace extended to me in so many ways?

Being grateful applies to all levels - the big stuff, dh has a job, we have a home, the kids are healthy etc but it is also really important to acknowledge it in the small stuff in life. When you start to notice God in the everyday and choose gratitude and joy your life will start to change - I promise.

  • Finding a great new Church where we have been enjoying lively worship and sound teachings
  • A lovely afternoon with my family looking at a Christmas tree and crib festival
  • A divine lunch in the park cafe on a no-tech Sunday
  • A fab training session encouraging me to speak out (yes even more than I already do, there are new avenues to be explored)
  • Time spent with some of our international volunteers
  • Crafting Christmas cards for friends
  • Making snowman soup with the girls for Christmas gifts
  • Cuddles on the sofa with JJ
  • Amazing sunsets that can be seen from my front door most nights
  • Having enough time to read my bible and enjoy it
I could go on and on but instead I'll show you some photos that fill me with joy.

I'm linking this post up with Reasons to be Cheerful, this is being hosted by Jo over at Ojos World for all of December.  Go visit her and link, pretty please....

Wishing you a blessed week. Mich x

Preparing for winter with Muddy Puddles

Since moving to the countryside you'll have noticed that I like to get the kids out in all weathers, even the pelting rain. Of course there is one weather we have not experienced yet here in East Sussex and that is snow but I'm keen to get kitted out so we can enjoy it when it arrives.

All the winter coats have arrived and most of us have sturdy boots or shoes so it was just Miss E to sort with some snow boots. Luckily Muddy Puddles offered her a gorgeous pair of girlie snowboots to review.

Now obviously she has not worn these in the snow as yet but she is in love with them and constantly wears them around the house and has even been out walking in the cold and wet to get used to them. Apparently there was no real need to wear them in though as she says they are super comfy. You can see her here the day they arrived and she cam back form school, she tore open the box and started to wear them.

The inside is soft and fleecy and the outside is a waterproof polyester. They come in pink, blue and black so you can match them to your ski outfit if you so desire. The zip and velcro flaps are so easy to use that any child can do their own up and I love that - quick and simple. The base of the foot is hard and I can feel confident it will e waterproof in the snow but luckily the boots do not feel too heavy. You can also see in the picture how great the sole is, loads of grip there.

The boots retail for £30.00 and I see there is free delivery on orders of £30 or more currently (until 8th Dec 2013). They are available in a child's size 5 right through to adult size 4.

As well as the boots the girls were also lucky enough to receive a fleece reversible hat and scarf each. The fleece is good quality and really kept the girls warm, there are four different designs/ colourways to choose from and you can even match up your wellies!

As you can see in the photo the small scarf is really quite small on on 6 year olds but it has a velcro fastening so it stays shut and Miss M loved that she could easily tuck it in her jacket and it just kept her neck warm without being bulky. Miss M likes to wear hers outside of her jacket so I think the larger scarf would be better for her.

The scarves (both sizes), hats and gloves or mittens all retails for £10 each and of course that makes them more expensive than most supermarket brands but they are very good quality and will easily pass from one child to the next or last multiple winters.

I'd not heard of Muddy Puddles before working with them on this review but they have a great site and their products are very good quality, I'd happily shop there again when the girls needs wellies, wet weather gear or anything else for an outdoor adventure.

Disclosure: I received the items in this post free of charge for the purpose of this review. I have not been instructed what to write and I remain honest.

The conversations you don't want to have with your children

You tell those bullies off my baby!

I picked JJ up from scouts last week and on the drive home we were talking about school and what he is currently studying. We talked about various things and then he announced that it was national anti-bullying week but that his school would not be doing anything as they do not have any bullies. I had to bite my tongue as my instant reaction was 'what, that's crazy!'. I then calmed myself silently and wondered if it was some sort of positive reinforcement type strategy, you know if you make all the kids feel valued and not accused, it might then help them to not undertake the bullying behaviour.

The next day I was speaking to some other parents from the school and they were as appalled as me that bullying would not be covered and their children have been in the school far longer and they assured me there was some bullying type behaviour, not what I wanted to hear but to be expected. Also one of them made a really good point, that even if it is a one-off school with perfect students what about the kids going to secondary school in a few short months, surely they need preparing for what has become really common?

However, I won't go all guns blazing to the school as I've been pleased with what I have seen of the teaching and the school life in general so far, so I need to trust that God is in this (it is a CofE school) and that the Head Teacher has reasons for the approach they have taken.

Realising that the school are not covering this topic did throw it back into my court and as a parent who wishes to be responsible I felt I needed to have a heart to heart with JJ. So there we were on our journey home and I mention to JJ that a young girl has taken her own life recently because of bullying and that I have a poem I'd like him to read. This of course opens up a really difficult conversation 'how old was she Mum?', 'why didn't she tell her teacher?', 'Why did they bully her?' I patiently tried to answer all his questions as best I could and of course I don't really have the answers, I did not have the privilege to know Izzy Dix.

I heard my 10 year old so adamant that Izzy should have told people how she felt and that nothing could be that bad, why didn't she change schools? 'I'd tell you Mum' and it felt reassuring to know he feels that confidence to talk to me, to fight back, to report people who are treating others unfairly. I reassured him he must always keep talking to me even if it is to tell me he has done something bad or naughty, I will always be in his corner. I just have to make sure I listen and take what he says seriously, a really hard call I'd imagine, as what parent wants to hear the worst?

We talked about why Izzy might have been bullied and I said I did not know the reason but from the pictures I had seen of her she was a beautiful girl and very smart too and that sometimes people do not like others who are prettier or smarter than them and they choose to be nasty and bully them. It was a real eye-opener when he asked me 'why didn't she change so they wouldn't bully her anymore?', 'she could have messed her hair up and got rubbish marks'. This of course prompted the conversation of why should anyone have to change just because one or a few people can not cope with who they are. We are all different and all God created and it is perfect that we show off our uniqueness and be who we want to be.

I think this conversation really started to show me just how mature my young man is getting, instead of my getting cross with answers that he gave I chose to question him and explore his answers with him, making sure that he could think through the consequences of his actions and thought processes. He told me that at school he had been told that bullying is when nasty behaviour is three times or more, it has to be ongoing and that just once is a mistake. We talked about how people do make mistakes and that sometimes people bully without even consciously realising that is what they are doing, however that does not make it acceptable.

I then made the choice to share part of my past with JJ and I found myself saying 'I was a bully when I was young' and yes I get a lump in my throat typing that. It eats me up to think that I could have been part of a long campaign of bullying that could easily have spoilt the life of a young boy. Thankfully I have been in touch with that boy in recent years and he has finally managed to move on. Click on the link if you want to read my account of being a bully, if my revelation can help any child to be aware of their actions then it is worth shaming me.

Never did I want to have to tell my kids I was guilty of bullying but I think it was a necessary admission and if it helps them to think about their actions and not to get involved with harassing any other child then it is worth the moments of discomfort I felt as we had the conversation. I can see the future now, there will be so many of these conversations with the kids that I don't really want to have. But they are necessary to help my children make good judgements and to be responsible as they grow and mature.

As a direct response to what happened to Izzy, a petition has been set up on change.org to ask the Govenment to close down Ask.fm, a Latvia based social networking site which gives anonymous bullies a platform and has been hotly linked to a number of teen suicides. Please head over and show your support and please make sure you are talking to your kids about bullying and particularly cyberbulling and how to be safe online.

I pray that the Izzy Dix anti-bullying memorial group's mantra of 'Don't bully. Love instead' becomes a national banner in all our schools, children's groups and online.

My picture: His words - Trust

This week I have been learning all about trust. There have been various situations present themselves and the normal humanly response might be to panic and worry. I am trying not to be too human in my response and instead I choose to trust in the Lord and know that His plan is perfect and it will all work out.

Sometimes things are not easy, I recall hearing a number of years back that God is not so much interested in our comfort as He is our character. For sure all these troubles and toils that we go through certainly make us stronger and develop our character.

I took this photo earlier in the week as I had a walk around the grounds where I live. I love seeing the birds everywhere and hearing them sing. On this day the clouds were amazing, long white lines sweeping through a crisp blue sky. I love the contras of the stark empty branches and the rich sky colour.

If you fancy joining in then please do, I'd love to come and visit you and see how God has been speaking to you.  Please go and visit others in the linky, there will only be a couple of us and it would be great to encourage each other.

Wishing you a blessed week ahead, Mich x

Christmas crafting - 26 more sleeps

As you know the kids are counting down the sleeps until the big day and I'm pleased to say we are now at just 26 more.  Thankfully I'm up to date with the shopping and our Christmas is being spent as part of the community here so I don't have that many preparations to be done, it is fabulous!

During the run up to Christmas the kids and I will be keeping a 'sleeps diary' as we count down in anticipation of the fun ahead, we are doing this in collaboration with Mothercare. This weekend the girls and I enjoyed some time together making some crackers for our breakfast Christmas table and also making decorations to go up on our stairway as part of our Christmas house make-over.

We used instructions and a craft pack sent to us by Cartridgesave.co.uk. They have a number of free downloadable instructions and templates for easy Christmas crafts at the moment and you might fancy having a look on http://www.cartridgesave.co.uk/christmas.

It is also worth checking out their Christmas competition if you are a blogger, as they are giving away £500 in Amazon vouchers to the blogger who uploads the best Christmas cracker that they have made and decorated themselves. You need to create your cracker using their easy guide, then write a post and share photos of your cracker and send the photos and blog URL to them on christmas@cartridgesave.co.uk by 18th December 2013.

Here are mine and Miss E's entries to their competition. Miss E wanted to copy my design and she cut and stuck it all herself, I think she did a fab job and I even prefer her finished cracker to my own!

Miss E, aged 6 years

Mummy, aged considerably older than 6 years!
As well as the crackers the girls enjoyed glass painting some decorations that we had bought and they want to give some of them away as gifts. I think they will make lovely little mementos for people. I just need to string them up.

Rebecca at Here Cme The Girls has put together a great post with 100 crafts for kids.

Disclosure: I am working with Mothercare to create a sleeps diary during December, they have provided me with PJ's for the girls and vouchers for my time. Cartridgesave sent me a craft pack to make my crackers and be able to enter their competition. I have not been instructed what to write by either party and as always I remain honest.

Released #Prose4T

Hello, if you have stopped by to find Reasons to be Cheerful then you need to head over to Lakes Single Mum as Becky is hosting for the rest of November and then in December it will be over with Jo at Ojo's World.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm finding part of life quite hard,
it comes and attacks me, for I have no guard.

But unhappy is not the right word you see,
as in general life is as blessed as can be.

Good husband, great kids, nice home.
So many gifts, little cause to moan.

There is just this one area of my life,
it gives me so much pain and strife.

It should be easy, 'get a grip' you say,
but for some of us it just isn't that way.

I want to sort it out, I want to get better,
I know there's a need, that's why I'm writing this letter.

But there is no easy path,
it will be lots of hard work and graft.

Am I ready for that I wonder, can I take off this mask?
For unveiling makes me vulnerable and reminds me of the past.

But change has to happen, I can not go on this way,
I need to be strong each and every way.

Now is the time to stop being scared, a good example I must set,
and that means walking every day step by step.

No need to take great leaps Michelle,
every inch forward is a step out of this living hell.

Trust in the Lord and let Him be king,
then finally you will be released from this awful thing.

Thank you Jesus.

Plaque at Beachy Head, East Sussex

Giving is receiving

All the Operation Christmas Tree shoeboxes that have been collected at my local church.
My family and I were happy to give quite a few from us.

Recently I've discovered the Pigeon Pair and Me blog written by Nell, she is embarking on a journey for a year to gift things to other people. All sorts of things. It makes for interesting reading, go and take a peek.

On 17th December she is hosting the BritMums carnival and has set the theme as a carnival of gifts and she is asking people to share where they have given something away.

This really got me thinking about the act of giving and how important it is as a biblical principle. As Christians we understand that everything we have is a gift from God and as such it is just loaned to us and we do not really own it. There is no point in accumulating wealth for the sake of it, money is to be used wisely and not stockpiled. I have to be honest and say this is a lesson that takes some getting used to when you become a Christian, as our society teaches us that if you work hard you can do well and have it all. Wealth and status are seen as indicators of success and actually this is so off the mark. Some of the most successful and content people I know are not wealthy.

Things like regularly giving other people money, putting credit on their electric meter, buying them shoes when they need them or doing grocery shopping for someone else are not the norm here in the UK, but truly they are lessons in humility and gratitude for all you have. Why should some have so much and others so little? It is easy to try and justify it by how hard you work or how lazy they appear to be but we are all Gods children and it makes Him proud to see us caring for each other. My last Church family taught me some amazing lessons in how to share what I have and I was so blessed by the progress I saw in the lives of others as the love and care we show makes a difference to them. Also just think what a great example it is showing to my children as they grow up knowing some people had very little and we opened our house to them and helped make their everyday just a little bit more comfortable.

Giving is an everyday part of my life and that is just the way I like it. I am a different person to who I was  eleven years ago before I became a Christian. I can say for sure I am a better person for all the giving I have done in that time and I look forward to finding out what else I need to give away in the future. Some might say we gave up our security when we sold our house this summer and moved to East Sussex, we now live in a borrowed house and earn just a third of what we earned before but actually the freedom we have gained has been worth it. We are now tie free and can go where God asks us to.

We are all called to be good stewards of everything God has gifted us, we must not waste the money or resources we have but discern the best way to use them. I don't always get it right but I'm learning and I'm willing and that is important.

I'm excited to see what my future holds and I know one thing for sure I receive far more than I give and in giving I receive a great deal of satisfaction.

How about you, what is your stance on giving? Does it need to be reciprocal? Or can you literally just gift it?

So proud of you Miss E

It really is the simple things sometimes.

Well simple to me and simple to her siblings but Miss E struggles with literacy and we are wondering if there will be a diagnosis of dyslexia when she is slightly older. To be truthful, it does not matter if there is or there is not, she is still my smart little cookie and we will work with her to try and make things easier.

Today she sat down to write her name and for the first time ever she wrote it correctly first try. Normally we have a number of the letters backwards (she writes mirror image very often) but not today every single one just right. As I smiled at her and said 'Miss E, that is perfect' she looked up at me with the shy big blue eyes and beamed me the biggest smile ever and then I got my normal hug and 'Mummy, I love you'.

Well my small baby, I love you too and I know reading and writing is hard but I love your fire and your persistence to get it right. One day you will fly baby.............. hang in there!

My Picture: His Words - Beauty

You may well wonder why I'm posting a picture of a mushroom my blog but this week my lesson from the Lord has been about looking for beauty in unexpected places. When you really open your eyes you can see beauty all over the place and it does not have to be classically beautiful. God sees what is in us and that is what is important to Him.

Do you fancy joining in with me and sharing any lessons you have learnt or words of wisdom you have felt shared with you. Just post a picture and some God inspired words and link up.  Then of course visit anyone else who happens to link up (I can't imagine there will be that many of us!).

Have a blessed week, Mich x
