Home-Based Bible Studies Are Becoming More Popular; Here's Why

{This is a collaborative post}

In recent years, a quiet revolution has been taking place in Christian communities across America. Away from the grand sanctuaries and traditional church buildings, more and more believers are opening their homes for intimate Bible study gatherings. This shift toward home- based biblical education represents a significant trend in modern faith practice, combining ancient traditions with contemporary needs. Publishers like Pentecostal Publishing House offers beautiful KJV bibles perfectly suited for these personal study environments, providing participants with high-quality texts that enhance their spiritual journey.

The Numbers Behind the Movement

Recent surveys have revealed compelling statistics about this growing phenomenon. According to a 2023 Barna Group study, approximately 58% of practicing Christians participated in some form of home Bible study in the past year, up from 42% in 2019. This represents a substantial 38% increase in just four years.

The American Bible Society’s State of the Bible report indicates that while traditional church attendance has fluctuated, engagement with Scripture in small group settings has grown steadily, with home-based studies seeing the most significant growth at 23% since 2020.

Among younger generations, the trend is even more pronounced, along with home schooling. A LifeWay Research survey found that 64% of Christian millennials and 67% of Gen Z believers prefer studying the Bible in home settings rather than traditional church classrooms.

Seeking Authentic Community

One of the primary drivers behind this movement is the desire for genuine community. In an increasingly disconnected world, home Bible studies offer something that larger congregations sometimes struggle to provide: intimate fellowship and meaningful relationships.

“The home setting creates a natural environment for vulnerability and openness” explains Dr. Sarah Martinez, a sociologist specializing in religious trends. “People feel more comfortable asking questions, expressing doubts, and sharing personal experiences in a living room than they might in a church sanctuary.”

This sentiment is reflected in the growth statistics. Home groups that emphasize discussion and personal application report 30% higher retention rates than those focused solely on lecture-style teaching, according to research from the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability.

Flexibility in a Fast-Paced World

Another factor contributing to the popularity of home Bible studies is their inherent flexibility. In an era where demanding work schedules, family commitments, and other responsibilities compete for attention, the adaptable nature of home gatherings allows participants to engage with Scripture on their own terms.

Unlike traditional Sunday school classes that occur at set times, home Bible studies can be scheduled around the needs of participants. This flexibility has proven particularly attractive to working professionals, young families, and others who find conventional church schedules challenging.

Data from the Faith Communities Today survey reveals that 72% of participants cite scheduling flexibility as a key benefit of home-based Bible studies, with 68% reporting that they would be unable to attend traditional church-based studies due to timing conflicts.

Reasons to be Cheerful - Snow, Rock Hunting and Community Day

Happy Thursday #R2BC friends, sorry I haven't been around for a couple of weeks. I really need to get myself a bit more organised when it isn't my turn to host as I find that I forget to schedule in the time for my Reasons to be Cheerful post and then get lost in paid work and other commitments. I really am trying not to spend too much time blogging but still make enough money to cover some niceties like weekends away and days out.

It's been a good week for me generally. I wouldn't say I've been the most productive work wise but so what, that's not everything, right?

A New Gym
I've joined a new gym and had my induction. It's a great little place and I'm going there twice a week whilst the girls are at trampolining club and Guides. I love the idea that it fits in with lifts I need to do anyway, it feeds into my need for efficiency! lol

Wake up Sleepyhead

I had an amazing morning at church today, so much fun. God really is good.

Before we even got to the sermon there was a clear word for me as Sarah, a lady I recognise but don’t really know came up the front to share a prophetic word. She talked of how God had told her a few weeks ago to take her frying pan and a wooden spoon into church and to go round banging it, telling people to wake-up. She didn’t feel this was an act of judgement though but an act of love, that Jesus couldn’t bear that so many of us where missing out.

It was so special hearing Sarah speak as she was crying and quite embarrassed by what God was asking her to do but she knew that it was from Him and therefore she must be obedient, however uncomfortable it was for her. She said she had been ‘a bag lady’ for the last few weeks as she had bought her frying pans and spoons with her but had not taken action and then God told her today was the day, so there she was sharing with us. She invited anyone who felt called to do so to borrow some spare pans she had and within moments about six people had gone to join her.

What followed was a very powerful time of worship as we sang ‘I’ll stand with arms high and hearts abandoned’ by Hillsong as the frying pans were clanged, people were clapping and whopping and of course we were singing at the tops of our voices with hands and hearts raised in awe.

But it didn’t end there. Then another guy came up the front, I don’t know his name but he delivered a message repeated from one he had given at the 7.30am prayer meeting and it tied in perfectly. He spoke about how God wants to wake each one of us and fill us with the Holy Spirit, about how all the ‘stuff’ I’ve allowed myself to be consumed with has pushed the Spirit out and taken the place He should have.

He spoke for quite some time with all of it resonating with me and giving me more and more clarity, but the only bit I could instantly link to a bible passage, was the following from Ephesians 5:14  (NIV) –

This is why it is said:

“Wake up, sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

I really felt God tell me I’ve been like someone in a diabetic coma. I have been dangerously close to death and He wants me back. No longer must food be my everything, I have to wake up to the reality that I WANT and NEED the Holy Spirit far more than I want excess food. I need to repent of my active rebellion. Why have I been choosing to act out like a naughty teenager?

He wants to wake me, fill me and send me to make a difference and that is what I yearn for to. To be useful. To make a difference. So repentance is the only way and not the kind of repentance that a child thinks of. It is not enough for me to say sorry for overeating, for getting heavier by the day, for putting my health at risk, for hiding away, for worrying my children. I have to repent in the true meaning of the word. I must make a 180 degrees turn and walk away from the source of my sin.

It is super simple what I have to do. But for me, it is not easy. So I have to WAKE-UP and rely on Him.

The serenity prayer has helped me in tough times before, so I need to get it printed off and pasted up in visible places to help keep reminding me to be strong in the Lord. I have to remember what it says in 2 Corinthians 12:9 “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Simply put when I weak, He is strong.

We had loads more fabulous worship after this word and a song I don’t know too well, spoke so much to me – ‘Spirit of the Living God, Come fall afresh on me. Come wake me from my sleep’. So very apt, listen to it here, it is just beautiful.

Do you have to go to Church to be a Christian?

I put it out there recently and have said to real-life friends and those I know on social media that I'd love to answer their questions relating to my faith. As I get to know someone I often find that they then feel more comfortable to ask me about what makes me a Christian and what I believe. I am always happy to share but I'll be honest, they are not always easy or comfortable conversations as the answers I give have to be truthful and sometimes they are not what the person wants to hear.

I've now got a few questions lined up to answer and I am really happy to take more, so if you have something you would like to ask (even if it is really forthright) then leave me a comment or send me an email.

You'll have seen from the title of this blog post what the question is today - Do you have to go to church to be a Christian? - and this is what a friend Katie asked me the other day. Here is my perspective and I'll give bible references to support my belief but you may find that other Christians believe something different to me and this is the complex part of my faith, many feel the bible is open to interpretation but I choose to believe the bible is the word of God and is to be taken as such.

As a Christian what do I stand for?

I had an amazing time at church this morning; I was really in need of a good dose of worship, Christian fellowship and sound bible teaching and I didn't leave disappointed. One of our Pastors has been on a sabbatical for the last 11 weeks and this morning he came back and started to share with us what God has been speaking to him about during his time away.

You could tell just by looking at him that he was glowing and had had an awesome time; he was literally bubbling over full of the Holy Spirit and it was infectious. I'm sure most of us went away feeling renewed and refreshed by his teaching about Christ being in each of us and that being our hope of glory.

There is no other answer, Christ is it. He is enough.
"...The mystery in a nutshell is just this: Christ is in you, so therefore you can look forward to sharing in God’s glory. It’s that simple.."" Colossians 1:27 (Message)

Grace in small things - Christmas time

I know many people are feeling stressed and unhappy right now and I pray they work through that quickly and realise that most of the stuff they are worrying about really does not matter too much. If they have their health, some friends or family about, enough food to eat well and a warm home then they are in a great place.

Despite an infection of some sort (chest or throat I'm not sure, I just know I've been poorly) I'm still feeling incredibly grateful and happy that Christmas is just around the corner. I'll share my thankfulness in photos this week -

Both our Christmas trees are up and we have sparkle and bling galore, I love it!

I adore these matryoshka dolls that I bought when I was visiting Belarus last year, they make me smile each day as I see them on the fireplace.

I am a sucker for stained glass and the church this morning that we visited for the kids carol concert was full of beauties

Monday night after a day in bed and still feeling very low the last thing I wanted was a group of people coming to our house but I knew I would enjoy seeing our pastoral group. I was so blessed by the lovely volunteers who came and joined dh and I for a meal and some fun. We got treated to chicken curry, a Brazilian dessert and these fabulous Czech biscuits.

I'm getting much better at learning how to use my new camera (my early Christmas present). It is a Lumix G5 and instead of going for the obvious choice of a DSLR, I went a different route and it is a CSC which means it is much smaller than a DSLR as it does not have the classic mirror prism but I can still swap lenses and manually adjust all my settings.I think I'm doing OK for a totally new user, just look at those water drops on the wildflower.

Lastly a big thank-you to Bon Marche who sent me through a pretty box of their accessories to use in the cold and wet months. How did they know red was my favourite colour?

#CountryKids - Dead wood sculptures

We had such fun as a family last Saturday, in fact I'd go as far as to say it was my favourite day since we moved to our new home.  I can't believe it will be 4 weeks we have been here on Monday, on one hand that is no time at all and we have done so much and on the other it has whizzed past in a whirlwind and the kids will go back to school in the not too distant future. Never did I think that I might be just a little sad about that.

Last Saturday afternoon we joined up with about 6 other families from our local church to take part in a fun youth activity afternoon. Once a month all the kids of 8 years and more meet together to do something fun but this month as it was the holidays all the family were invited to join in. So we set off with our road map to head for a farm in the middle of nowhere to what we thought would be a treasure hunt and BBQ, we had been warned to wear sturdy shoes as we had to go over a field of sheep and told we would be heading into a coppice to explore. We were up for it, it is good to do something different after all.

After many a winding road and a trip up the steepest, more narrow lane I've ever seen we finally ended up on top of the world and the views were fantastic. Every side of the farm had sheep and we were directed to drive across a field full of sheep and we reached our new friends. After a few quick hellos we were pointed in the direction of the coppice and the kids were told they could go explore if an adult was with them.  Well off they all headed with dh and I thought I better follow suit.

After splitting into two teams and seeing who could navigate the coppice the fastest everyone was firm friends. We were then set the tasks to split into three teams and told to make a sculpture from all the dead wood. Dh and I ended up with a team of 4 young girls including our twins and we decided we would make a horse. The girls collected sticks and came up with ideas whilst dh stringed them together. It was so great to watch all the children as they ran around, laughed, plotted, teased each other and came together to make a sculpture.

Of course a BBQ was next and we all filled our tummies with sausages, burgers, crisps and biscuits. The kids ran around the the adults chatted and we just had time to have a quick puzzle building competition before the heavens opened and the rain came.

We had about 3 hours of great fun and I look forward to getting to know all our new church friends a lot better over the coming months.

The Gallery: My blog is...

OK, I can hear you now!  What Michelle, your blog is a tent?

A marque?

A big top?

or maybe you are thinking it is a circus......  that might be closer!

No, here's the next clue

That is what is going on inside the big top.  That is Tuesday morning 19th April 2011.  There are approximately 2000 of us all having an awesome time! The next one gives away what was going on in the big top! It is the Church of Spring Harvest, the large Christian festival held at Butlins each year.

You may still be completely confused and wondering what on earth any of this has to do with my blog?  Yes?

Well for me, my blog is Church.  This is where I get to do my bit for God.  To shine my light and demonstrate that us Christians can be really average and normal just like anyone else.

Every time I look at my stats and see that hundreds of people have been visiting each day I squeal silently and thank the Lord that I am able to do my part in raising awareness of issues close to my heart and especially close to God's.

Take a look at Tara's blog if you fancy checking out more Gallery posts.  I bet there will be a very diverse array of pictures this week.

I wonder if anyone else considers their blog to be Church?

Last Week I felt like a Big Fat Failure!

I really did.

Not in my life in general, things are not that doom and gloom but in regards to my weight, size, fat - call it what you will! I know that logically I am very blessed and that despite being pretty darn large I am still lucky enough to be a fairly attractive woman.  I have great hair, a pretty good dress sense (listen to me!) and family and friends who completely bless and edify me.

Yet I sat there at my ED (Eating Disorder) meeting and acted like a child saying I was fed up of being fat and having to try.  I was jealous of others who lost their weight or of others at my group who have more time than I do to focus on their recovery.  I really was a completely spoilt brat and you know what?  I enjoyed it.  I needed that self-indulgent time to get the crap off my chest. Slate cleared and ready to move on...

Then late last week I found the blog of a really inspirational lady Alyson, she went from a size 22 to a 10 in a  about a year.  I really wanted what she had and said so.  This kind hearted lady asked me to join a little group she has on Facebook and to work with a group of ladies to lose weight together.  In the space of a few short days I feel like I have known some of these ladies years and they are my best weight loss buddies ever.  I am so pleased to have found this group and I want to tell you that you all Rock!

The good news is that I had a spiritual awakening at the weekend.  At Church one of the ladies stood up and talked about a vision of people being in the wilderness and needing a warm spa to refresh and cleanse them and that if anyone felt like this God was there for them and wanted to refresh them.  It was me, this spoke to me really powerfully.  That day I sat down and wrote myself a list of things that I commit to do each day/ week to help me with my recovery.  I now have a list which looks like this:
  • Read my bible each day
  • Read some ED literature every day
  • Write a weekly food plan and commit my food daily to my food sponsor, then own up to my actual eating each day.....  lose weight as a result of this
  • Exercise in some small way at least 5 times a week
  • Pray and reflect each day, have time to just BE rather than to keep doing things...
  • Go to bed by 11pm most nights
  • Have at least a couple of days per week away from blogging and the PC
I was ill at the beginning of the week, which was not great but it gave me a kick start to slow down and to cut my eating down.  I now feel well again and to be honest I am on top of the world at the moment.  Things feel as if they are going my way.

On Monday I weighed and I was 17st 1lb, today I weighed and I was 16st 10lb, so a nice little loss in a few days.  I just now need to be careful and keep away from the scales - they can be a very dangerous thing for me. See something good on them and I want to eat to treat myself for being good, see something bad and I want to press the 'F it' button and eat anyway!  Note to self - must not weight myself much!

My Favourite Day Of The Week.... Sunday

What is your favourite day of the week? Do you even have one?

I have heard people say many different things before - Friday, as it is classically the last day of the working week, Wednesday as the bulk of the working week is then over, Saturday as it is a day to shop and relax or just no getting up for the school run in the morning.

Well my favourite day of the week by far is Sunday. That is my sabbath, my chill day. The day my family gets to be together and we go to Church and do you know what? I love it, it is not a chore at all. It is something I look forward to each week. Often I will go twice in one day and that is not from necessity either - it is pure desire on my part.

Here is a few pics of my family at Church - do we look bored?

We have been going to this Church for just over 2 years now and it is fab. I never imagined I would got to such a vibrant Spirit-led Church. If you ever fancy coming with me to see what it is all about - just ask!

Sunday is also the time, when all my family are together and we can go out and enjoy each others company - here are the kids at a garden centre, pretending they are at Santa's door! Can you tell which ones the show offs are??

Today, Miss E and I spent about an hour together, alone and she revealed in it! We have done it many times before and every time she gets excited and tells me that it is special, just for me and her 'cos we is best friends Mummy'. So here is a picture of Miss E and her best friend in the whole wide world - yes folks - that's me! How beautiful is that?

Lastly a couple of snippets from the mouth of JJ this week. He really is turning out to be a funny little soul.
Me - Daddy is going to do some painting on Wednesday babe, you can help him if you like. You can be his apprentice.
JJ - What's an apprentice Mummy?
Me - Someone learning a new skill from a master or a trainee.
JJ - No Mummy, I must be the master and Daddy can learn from me, because you told me he is Mr X and I am Master X.
Well I suppose he is right, there was no answer to that!!
and I leave you with this classic -
JJ - Daddy, was Camden (as in London) named after David Camden?? (Current PM).

Pop over and visit Marilyn at Pure Unadultered Softhistle and see what other Sunday Snippets people have to share with you!

Enjoy your week, Mich x

ahhhhhhh...

...that is me sighing a big breath of relief that I am home.

We went to Church this morning as the pastor and his wife are moving onto another church. We will be so sorry to see them go as they are very welcoming and inspirational. The Pastor's teaching will be very missed. In fact he was one of the main reasons we kept coming back to the Church when we first visited in June last year.

Anyway we had the service, we prayed over the pastor and his wife, I shed a tear, the kids had a good play in creche and children's church and Jacob got sung Happy Birthday to and received a nice new kiddies bible. Then it was time for the bring and share lunch - which looked fabulous. They decided to do the service table by table, which is a sensible idea but three small kids and an hour later it did not seem to sensible to us. Boy were the girls tired, bored and restless - running about everywhere and driving dh and I mad. By the time we needed to go up and get food there was not so much left, the kids were starving and dh did not want to eat - he is veggie and I think it just felt too much hassle. As we ate the kids were naughty and generally overtired. I got to breaking point and announced we were leaving. Packed all the kids up, cleared the table, grabbed JJ's birthday cake from the kitchen (yes it is his birthday and of course he could not understand why he was not first up there getting his food as he was the special 6 year old boy!) and left. I did not make a big scene before you worry. I quietly let the organiser know the girls were tired and no need to do JJ's cake. It is a real shame I did not get to give Phil and Elaine a cuddle but I have emailed and given them a card so I trust they know how much we will miss them and of course they have hundred's of people to hug today.

I dropped JJ and dh at the Galleria and they have gone to see Toy Story 3D, he will enjoy this much more than Church. He is then having a McDonalds after and we are going to pop into nanny and Grandad's to do his cake. Then home for some lego making as he got the toy of his dreams - the lego fire station. It was all he wanted and he was so overjoyed to receive it this morning.

Dh and I are going to enjoy a take away tonight and chill out together.
