Which Butlins accommodation should you choose?

Having been to Butlins quite a number of times now I have stayed in most grades of accommodation and I often find that when I talk to people about Butlins they ask me where they should stay. “Are the hotels best if I’m going to Bognor Regis and if yes, which one?” and “Is there much difference between a standard and a silver room?” are the sorts of question I receive, so I thought it was high time that I shared my perspective of all the accommodation grades in one post and I’ll also link to some other reviews to help you gain a wider perspective.

Types of accommodation

Probably the first thing to clarify is the types of accommodation that you can book at Butlins. In my experience all three resorts have very similar rooms but there might just be small differences, whereas Skegness might have showers in one grade of accommodation, Minehead might have baths in the same and often the external views of the accommodation is different. So it is always worth reading carefully what it says on the web when you book if you have specific requirements.

First off there are the rooms, these generally do not have a lounge or kitchen area and they are the accommodation you book when you want to stay half board and have your meals provided by Butlins. Apartments are for self-catering guests and these will feature a kitchen and dining area; how well equipped they are will depend on the grade of accommodation you book but I’ll go into that more in a minute. You can add meals to your package when you stay in an apartment but be aware this is going to cost you quite a bit more as you get a lot more space than in a room. Lastly at Bognor Regis there are three hotels and these can be booked as room only or add on breakfast or half board accommodation and at Minehead there are the luxury Blue Skies apartments.

Grades of accommodation

Standard
– This is the most basic accommodation that Butlins offers and the last time I stayed in standard was in April 2012, so it has been a little while but knowing Butlins I can only expect that it has got better rather than worse. They are exceptionally good at updating things and refurbishing their bedroom stock. At some holiday villages I would not want to stay in the basic but I can honestly say we were happy in our standard accommodation, it was slightly more dated than other grades and the décor and furniture is more basic and plain.

Silver – Pretty much like the standard accommodation to be honest but better decorated in a more contemporary style and the web says the main difference is that you get a microwave in the apartment. Personally we found that when we stayed in a silver bungalow at Minehead last year we got all sorts of extras like an iron and board, hairdryer. For value this is probably my favourite grade of accommodation. You can read my Silver Bungalow at Minehead review or check out Hex Mum’s review of a Silver room at Skegness.

Gold – There is a separate reception for the guests staying in the gold accommodation, which is a nice touch and means you can easily find someone close at hand to answer any queries or to book activity sessions. This accommodation is fairly similar in its styling to the silver grade but you also get a dishwasher in the apartment and also iron and board, hairdryer, widescreen TV with DVD, second TV in the master bedroom, personal safe and early check-in from 3pm. There are towels and toiletries provided in the bathroom and the rooms also come with daily housekeeping. Some also have balconies or terraces but generally you pay a little more for these.  You can read my review of a gold apartment at Minehead or check out A Strong Coffee’s review of a Gold apartment at Skegness.

Deluxe – This is the best grade of the traditional chalet style accommodation and the décor is very tasteful. Cream walls, brown leather sofas, glass shelves, black-out curtains, silver door handles and switches etc. You will find everything in the Deluxe grade that you find in the Gold with early check-in, daily housekeeping, towels provided etc. There are also normally a balcony or terrace area provided and they all come with a dedicated parking space, which is really convenient and outside your door. Unlike the Gold accommodation, there is not a dedicated reception for Deluxe. In my opinion unless a parking space makes a lot of difference to you then I personally think Gold is the better option. You can read my review of the Deluxe Suite at Bognor Regis.

Hotels – Bognor Regis – There are three hotels on site with the Wave being the newest, then the Ocean and the Shoreline being the first that was built.  I personally have only ever stayed in the Wave but my understanding is that the Shoreline Hotel is best for those with younger children as you can breakfast with Billy Bear and put him to bed at night, it is also right next door to the Billy’s playground area. You can read One Dad 3 Girls review too.

The Wave hotel is better for older kids as it has a games downstairs with things like Wii’s, Macs etc and the bedrooms all have a pod for the kids to share with bunk beds and DVD’s at the end of each bed. The styling of the Wave is very funky and modern and there are interconnecting rooms for big families and also self-catering apartments which sleep up to 6. You can read my review or Lakes Single Mum’s of the Wave hotel and Inside the Wendy House reviewed one of the Reef apartments.

The Ocean Hotel is the most luxurious of the hotels with a spa and butler service, I’ve not stayed here yet but this is the one I’m dreaming about. You can check out the reviews from Twins Tiaras and Tantrums or The Boy and Me's.

Blue Skies – Minehead – I’ve seen the apartments from the outside but never been in but boy do they look fantastic but having checked out the prices a few times they should do as they are considerably more expensive.  I can see why though as the sea views are uninterrupted and really stunning.

Final considerations -

*  When you are booking what I would say is not to make any assumptions, look at the price for all accommodation grades as sometimes you are surprised when you do a search, as accommodation you would not expect comes up cheaper, for instance I stayed on holiday this year in May and found that a Deluxe lodge (meant for self-catering, so it has a dining area/ kitchen) actually came up slightly cheaper (£40) than the Deluxe Suite we stayed in.

*  Think about the age of your children and how much time you will spend in the accommodation.  If you have older kids and you know you are activity hungry then chances are you will spend all day busy and all evening at the shows and just use the accommodation to sleep in, that way a standard room might just make sense and will be so much cheaper. For us we know our younger children need to be in bed by about 9pm most nights and thus we like to have a lounge to relax in once the kids are in bed.

We've always really enjoyed our Butlins breaks but now it is time for something different and Helen at Actually Mummy is making me think that Center Parcs would be find to try. Check her Center Parcs holiday review out.

Disclosure: I am a Butlins Ambassador this year and as such we were provided with a 4 night break for 5 people for the purpose of undertaking a review. I have not been told what to write and I remain honest.

Butlins Bognor Regis – Is it good for a family holiday?

We have been to Butlins to stay so many times now and that must speak volumes. The vast majority of our holidays we have paid for and there is always a great deal to be had, especially if you can go out of school holidays. Term time holidays are perfect for families with toddlers and babies as it is quieter on resort but there is still a whole abundance of fun.  Probably my favourite Butlins holidays were those when my kids were toddlers and we had a great mixture of relaxation and full-on fun.

Nowadays my children are 6, 6 and 10 and they just want to go, go, go non-stop and this gets a bit tiring for me if I am honest. Coming to Butlins in the school holidays is mega busy and it is not somewhere you would go for down-time and really you would not be getting your money’s worth if you just relaxed here. The point of Butlins is to be busy and to have fun.

5 Highlights from Butlins, Bognor Regis

You may have seen that our family have been staying at Butlins, Bognor Regis this last week. What a ball we have had, such a lot of fun in a short space of time. The kids sure have some tales to tell when they go back to school today.

I asked each member of the family for a highlight from our recent stay and these are the things they said not to miss if you are going to Butlins this year.

1.  Dick V Dom - This 45 minute show is a sure fire hit with kids of all ages. I'll admit I was really looking forward to this as I used to watch Dick and Dom back in the early 2000's. I was already in my twenties by then so who knows why but their toilet humour and slapstick comedy obviously had me hooked. More recently my kids have seen them on CBBC and when JJ heard they were there he was super excited. He headed straight off to buy their book and instructed me I had to take pictures he could share at school. Apparently it would be like the coolest thing to be 10 years old and have met 'the real Dick and Dom'.

They seemed like very nice guys and were happy to chat with the kids. It did make me chuckle when Miss M decided she would swap her mate Jacob's hat over with Dom.  He was a good sport and joined in!

2. Eat at the Diner - New to the Bognor Regis site is a fabulous 50's style diner. It looks really plain and nothing out the front and then you get inside and the decor is stunning, the seats and booths comfy, the food excellent, the staff super friendly and the regular entertainment not to be missed. My girls loved dancing with the entertainers and they were taught a few new rock and roll moves!  The milkshakes are not cheap at 3.95 each but they are made with 3 scoops of ice cream and come with an American style top-up! If we had one of these local to home I know we would be regular customers, I've not seen my husband smile and sing in such a long time!

3.  Watch the Cirque Du Hilarious show - This is quite a long evening show at 2 hours but it is jam packed and has lots of variety. JJ is still reciting some of the jokes even now. There was comedy, magic, dancing, music, stunts and so much more.  A real variety show which makes you 'ohh' pretty often but be warned it will get super busy.  The show started at 7.15pm and I joined the queue at 6.35pm, it only took me 5 minutes to get into the venue but I literally bagged the last table.

4.  Spend time at the funfair - We visited the fair most days as it is not often you can drive the dodgems, slide down the helter skelter and bounce on the trampoline without having to fork out any money! There is also late night rides on Wednesday and Saturday evenings from 7 - 9pm and JJ felt very grown up that he was able to go along on his own for a bit.

5. Go bowling - I know for many people this is probably not that exciting but my younger two have only ever bowled once before and they were really excited to be able to bowl with their mate Jacob, having not seen him for about a year. Bowling costs 5.00 for an adult or 2.50 for a child and is well worth it, we booked the day before and secured 2 lanes on our last evening and it meant we had the best send-off!

And in the interest of a balanced perspective, I will share our top 5 disappointments of this year too -
  1. At age 10 JJ is too tall to go in the soft play and this made him very sad as he wanted to play with his sisters and he felt he was being penalised for being very tall.
  2. We missed being in a hotel and having a king size bed and free wi-fi.
  3. The helter skelter was closed for three days due to it being wet from the rain.  Come on, this is the UK, of course it will rain!
  4. The main skyline toilets being out of toilet paper by 4pm in the afternoon.
  5. Queueing in the rain on the first night for our meal. I do have to say though we never queued more than one family in front of us after that.

We had a great holiday this year, thanks so much Butlins, you sure know how to host a super fun holiday!

A year in photos - Beautiful flowers and Butlins (week 22)

We started off with a quiet weekend knowing that once Monday came and we arrived at Butlins it would be full on. JJ was away at camp and the girls had a late night as there was a nice fireworks display where we live.  I discovered it is pretty hard to catch good firework photos.

Sunday I took a quiet walk by myself to see how things are changing with the season -

I spotted the gorgeous flowers being arranged for a friends wedding in the week.

Then Monday we headed off to Butlins and it was a great week. I have written about our stay a number of times and we met the fab Clare from Seasider in the City there with her family and some friends.

The 2p arcade machines are a big hit with Miss E.

JJ's highlight was meeting Dick and Dom and having his book signed.

I used Pic Monkey to try out a new effect on this photo and I think it works quite well, it has made it fun and you can still see all their expressions. The girls loved spending time with Clare's son.

Big and Little J are the joint winners of the crazy golf.  Looks at their winners stance!

And sharing a few photos from this weeks Instagram feed too -

We have had a super week and now I'm ready for a nice quiet weekend again and getting back to normal life......

Wishing you a blessed week ahead, Mich x

Review of Deluxe Suite, Butlins Bognor Regis

We have stayed at Butlins loads of times now but the last time we stayed in Deluxe accommodation was when my twins were 6 weeks old, they are now nearly 7.  I can promise you quite a lot has changed in that time but not everything!

Deluxe is the highest (and most expensive) grade of accommodation at Butlins with the exception of the hotels at Bognor Regis and Blue Skies at Minehead.

For our holiday this time we were staying with a premium dining plan so as half-board guests you would normally just book a room (or rooms if there are many of you) but this means that if you want to relax and watch some TV in the evening you have to do it in your bedroom. This is where the Deluxe Suite is fantastic as it has a separate lounge.

I'll walk you through what you get for your money in a Deluxe suite -

These are situated in Atlantic Bay and this basically means they are on the side of the main entrance, sadly they are across the car park away from the rest of the resort. It is not far to walk but this of course does not provide for a good view to the front, which is a shame as you do get a private patio area and some chairs for sitting out.

Butlins through the eyes of a 6 year old

At the moment we are at Butlins Bognor Regis, staying as part of their Butlins Ambassadors scheme, we arrived yesterday, so this has been our first full day and boy am I tired!

I have only just tucked up my 6 year old twins into bed and they were still protesting that they wanted to do more.  I'll show you exactly what they have been up to today and you will see why I need my bed...

Butlins - exciting new changes at Bognor Regis

For the last few weeks I've been receiving a steady stream of emails giving me all the information I need to know before we arrive for our Butlins holiday next week. I have to say that I often just gloss past them as I figure I know most things, having been to Butlins well over a dozen times in the last decade but tonight I decided that I'd follow one of the links and take a browse round the website and see what we could look forward to activities and entertainment wise.

Well, what a wake-up call that was, I'd obviously forgotten that nothing stands still with Butlins. Every season there is something new, an area redeveloped, a new taste sensation and the latest shows for both adults and kids. Talking of shows an Ambassador friend of ours went recently and she has recommended the Cirque de Hilarious as something we have to see. This apparently combines daredevil acts with comedy and will have us all busting our guts! JJ can't wait to see it.

Here is what else we are looking forward to; things that will be a new experience for us at Butlins, Bognor Regis -

*  Dick and Dom will be at Butlins. Can I confess that I am almost as excited about this as the kids are.

*  I let Miss E have a look around the site and see what she fancies and of course her eye was caught by Mister Maker straight away. This is her favourite show as she loves to draw and create. Sadly I now see that it is not on until the summer holiday but great news for those of you going in the summer.

*  We have not visited the Discovery studio yet at Bognor Regis but Miss M has already pointed this out as an experience she wants to be part of.  3D and animals all in one show are a hit for her. There is a cost of 5.00 per person for this but there is so little that you need to pay extra for that I'm happy to make some payments.

*  I've just pointed out to dh that there is a new evening show called Freddie and it is based on the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen, so now I've been informed we will definitely be going to that!

*  On the food front I spot there is a new diner which just opened this month, my friend Jenny has already been along and reviewed it and now I want to go more than ever. I've also nicked this photo from her, check it out!

*  Then for another day we can try out the new ice cream parlour, Scoop. Another friend of mine Laura, has already tried this out and she says it is good! (Thanks also to her for the image)

As you can see there are so many new things for us to see, do and eat and this is only at Bognor, every site changes regularly. When we were at Minehead in April the funfair had been completely refurbished and was looking fabulous.

If you have any out-of-date or preconceived ideas (hi-de-hi) of what Butlins is like nowadays I can bet you have got it wrong. Nowadays it is many things - full-on, exhilarating, glossy, well maintained and fun but there is still the care and traditional charm that Billy Butlin set our to create all those years ago.

Only 3 more sleeps to go!!  Yippee

Staying at Butlins, Minehead in a Gold Apartment

Last week we were lucky to attend Spring Harvest at Butlins in Minehead. I've mentioned numerous times before how much we all love this holiday that we take every year and this year was no exception. It was a week of fun, family, faith and food - a perfect combination in my mind. I have to be honest and say that I went home totally worn out, it was not a restful holiday as we stayed active the whole time.

As it was Spring Harvest when we stayed at Minehead this means that things are a little different to a regular Butlins stay, so we did not have any of the excellent entertainment that is normally provided. I've blogged about that before though in my capacity as a Butlins Ambassador so you can read all about that over here.

I've stayed in various grades of accommodation over the years at all three Butlins sites and what I can honestly say is that every year there is an improvement. Butlins never seem to rest on their laurels, they keep doing more and more and freshening things up.

This year we stayed in a gold apartment and this was a first for us. I have to be honest and say when I saw the outside I was disappointed, they look quite old fashioned. There are newer blocks of gold accommodation right by us and I really wanted one of those, so I went for a nose around and do you know what I found? Yes the outside looks smarter and the new ones have outside space, a decked area or balcony but in truth as it was April did I want to sit outside? What I found inside is that there is no difference at all. They are set up and furnished in completely the same way. The block we stayed in which I felt looked dated on the outside was actually newly decorated and in a really good state of repair.

Once inside my gold apartment I was super pleased, we had a two bedroom apartment which slept four of us. There was one double and one twin room.

There was great attention to detail, like the towel elephant on our bed when we arrived and the complimentary toiletries and kitchen pack.

I've not stayed in an apartment which had a dishwasher before, so this was a total luxury for us. I can confirm the kitchen was well equipped and had full inventory, inside the cupboards where spotless, the bin smelt good. It felt modern and there was easily enough space for the four of us to move around freely and not get on top of each other.
As we had booked for dinner, bed and breakfast we had a daily housekeeper come in and make the beds, empty bins and refill our loo paper etc. Again it was so so nice to not have to take my own bin bag out or have to rush tot he shop as I had forgotten to pack enough loo roll.

The lounge had a flatscreen TV and DVD player and we made use of this one night so the girls could have a chilled evening to refresh themselves for the busy days ahead. D did not fancy the kids dog movie so he headed off into our bedroom and watched the small TV in there.

The apartment felt as if it had most everything we needed - a safe, hairdryer, iron and board, dustpan and brush and toaster.

Improvements
If I was to make any recommendations to Butlins of improvement they could make I'd probably get them to choose some new coat hooks for in the hall, the ones we had were too small to hang cost on that did not have a loop. Also I'd love a dish drainer for next to the sink for when you do the odd bit of washing up. Oh and Butlins if one thing let you down in this apartment it was your pillows, they were flat as a pancake.

We would definitely stay in a gold apartment again.

Grateful to be home

Who wouldn't be excited to return home to here?

Home sweet home -
I have so much to be grateful for, I am literally overflowing with gratitude right now and I'll list some of the things making me feel good but the one simple thing that struck me tonight is that I'm grateful to be home. We have just had an amazing five days away at the big Christian conference Spring Harvest, held at Butlins in Minehead but now we are home I feel calm and content again. I really have turned into a homebody in my old age and the next few days of sorting the washing, catching up with blogging and chilling with my boys will be bliss.

Butlins without my boy

Next week we are off to Spring Harvest at Butlins, Minehead. We go to this large Christian festival every year and we always have a blast.  I count down the days and get super excited. Out of all the holidays and trips we take each year this is always my favourite as it is the time we are closest as a family and of course it is a week of encountering God, which comes high in my list of must-do's.

This year is going to be a little different though, as my JJ is not coming with us. Last year when we were booking he asked if he could go and stay with my parents instead and have some alone time with them. I do think this is a great idea and I know my parents and JJ will all really enjoy themselves. He will be spoilt silly and they will get to enjoy being full-on grandparents for five days.

But now we are getting close to the date I'm wondering how I'm going to feel without my big boy being with me. In the last couple of years JJ has come out in the evening with either dh or I and he goes to his club and we go to a session and then we meet and chat or have hot chocolate or something similar but this year he won't be there.

Review: Entertainment and Activities at Butlins, Bognor Regis

You might have seen that we took a recent 4 night, 5 day break to Butlins in Bognor Regis, you can check out my review of the Wave hotel. I thought I should probably share our opinions on the onsite entertainment and activities on the resort too.

First off I made a short video to share some pictures and video clips of some of the great shows and activities available -

Splash Waterworld -
We have been to all 3 Butlins and every one of them has a great Splash area with lazy river, wave area, kids slides, water canons, bubble pools,  flumes and raft rides.  I'll be honest, they are play pools far more then serious swimming but then play is what family holidays are about. The changing rooms are mixed sex and massive and there are enough lockers, even when it is chocca busy. You can also get involved in extra activities for a cost of £5 a session for aqua gliders, aqua walkers and even swim lessons. Bognor is probably the smallest waterworld but has our favourite slides.

Soft play -
I think Bognor Regis has the best soft play of all the Butlins, my kids had a great time on it, luckily JJ was just 1/2 cm within height to be able to use it. There are separate areas for the smaller and bigger kids and where it is in the main Skyline parents can grab a seat anywhere close they fancy, directly outside are benches or now mine are that bit older I was able to enjoy a coffee in the cafe nearby.

Bobs Yard -
At Bognor Regis there are four small fairground type rides that the little ones love. From about 1 - 7 years they are still a hit. We never waited longer than 5-10 minutes for any of them. There is also the popular puppet theatre.

Sports sessions -
There are tons of different sporting sessions available, some for specific age groups and others for all the family to enjoy together. JJ joined his 9-12 years Club Red group to do archery and absolutely had a ball. There is also football, beach volleyball, fencing, cricket etc

Children's Clubs -
As I mentioned JJ joined the Club Red on a few occasions, once to just chill with computer games and chat to new friends, another time he went geo caching and apparently this was EPIC and then again to do archery.  There were also various sessions that he did not take part in as we were busy or he did not fancy the craft or dancing, but the good thing is you can dip in and out.

The girls joined the 5-8 year old group and did a few 'get busy' sessions, at this age the parent needs to stay with them and I would recommend you get there early as there is no booking in advance but there is lots of fun and good craft activities.

Crazy Golf -
JJ and his Nanny really enjoyed the crazy golf and at £2.50 per person it does not break the bank. However, you could easily go through the week without having to do any of the extra paid activities to be honest. Nanny said she found the course a bit hard as there were too many obstacles but JJ loved it.

Adventure play park & Billy's play garden
Outside the onsite family pub is the wooden adventure play park, this is great when the sun is shining and all the kids can run off some energy. There is also a nice safe, enclosed park for under 5's next to the Shoreline hotel.

Live Shows -
There are more live shows than you can possibly watch in a week, some you just turn up for, others require booking (but have no cost). The video above will have shown you a clip of a few but my favourite was the Story book Panto. The girls loved Thomas Sodor Celebration and the Skyline gang and JJ was sad to have missed the superslam wrestling. The quality of the shows is really high but do expect things to be busy, you need to get to the Skyline or Centre Stage early if you want to get prime seats. We never bothered with that and nearly always turned up 5 minutes before start time, we were able to get chairs but not near the front.

Fairground -
The Bognor Regis fairground has been fully refurbished for this year, I wrote about this a couple of months ago and you can see some fabulous snaps in the video clip above. On busy days do expect to wait 5-15 minutes to get on a ride and make sure you check height and age restrictions.  JJ was upset to find he could ride the dodgems alone in Minehead in April this year but needed to be 13 years old for Bognor, most strange.

The resort -
In all we loved our holiday at Butlins, the resort is really green, clean and tidy and there is so much to do.  Too much in fact and I find you have to be quite strict with yourself to make sure you plan in some down time and just relax. As our kids get older and can go off alone for periods of time Butlins will be even better as it is a super safe environment to allow them their first small tastes of freedom.

Our kids took their scooters (and so did a few others) and they had a lot of fun going round the park and getting rid of their excess energy!

Out and about -
We also enjoyed taking a walk off resort and discovered the wonderful Hotham Park (literally just across the road). The kids met lots of new friends there and enjoyed the play park, adventure park, boating lake, model railway and pitch and put golf.

The land-train which runs up the seafront is also nice for the smaller ones and we visited the traditional arcade at the pier, as well as taking a casual stroll into Bognor Regis town to look round the charity shops.

On this holiday we made the decisions not to drive out anywhere and explore and this was an easy choice for us as we know the area well. If you come to visit and fancy heading out then head to Chichester for some great shopping, Littlehampton for a nice sandy beach, Worthing for traditional seaside fun, Arundel for a beautiful castle and generally explore the beauty of the South Downs.

In conclusion -
We had a superb week at Butlins and I'd like to say a heartfelt thank-you for choosing me to be an ambassador this year. I genuinely have nothing to go home and grumble about (well expect maybe being a bit tried as we packed so much in our week!).

I'll leave you with my kids, filmed on the last night. This is what they had to say about their stay -

Disclosure: I am a Butlins Ambassador this year and as such we were provided with a 4 night break for 6 people for the purpose of undertaking this review. I have not been told what to write and I remain honest.

Review: Wave Hotel at Butlins, Bognor Regis

You might have seen me mention that I'm a Butlins Ambassador this year and this means they asked me to go and try out one of their resorts and report back honestly to them and you, my readers about what I found.

We stayed at the Wave Hotel in the Bognor Regis resort. This hotel opened last July and is thus still very new looking. The outside is majestic and looks grand, as we approached my kids said 'wow, it is so posh Mum' and they are right, it is pretty posh - very modern looking but nice and luxurious too.

Car Parking
Our break was Monday to Friday on the May bank holiday/ half term week so I have to confess it was absolutely packed here. We arrived at the hotel at 3pm in time for the stated check-in time and I was incredibly lucky to find a parking space in the private hotel parking. It is a great idea to have separate parking and an even better idea to have a completely separate road entrance, this meant we could access the hotel easily but there was not really enough spaces for a busy week like this. There is an overflow car park which we could have driven to and they would have bought us back in a golf buggy, so contingency's have been thought about too.

Check In
As we arrived at the hotel at peak check-in time on a bank holiday it was heaving and my heart sank.  Seeing the queue I thought I would be there an age but I was really pleasantly surprised.  The staff were efficient and we were in our rooms within 15 minutes of entering the hotel, I received a good explanation of everything I needed to know about the hotel and the resort. There were 4 good sized lifts to take us to the 7 floors in the hotel and 2 of the lifts are big enough to fit luggage trollies in, which is very good.

Our Rooms
We had 2 interconnecting Dolphin rooms within the hotel. Each room sleeps 4 people. There is the main room with either double or twin beds and then a children's pod with bunk beds and a good sized bathroom. The Dolphin rooms are sea facing and have a balcony, which was super when the sun was shining. All the rooms are the same the price difference just comes with whether there is a balcony and if it is an inland or sea view. There are also some apartments in the Wave too but I did not get to see those.

Have a look at this video clip and it will give you a good idea of the space and decor in the rooms -

What I liked -
  • Modern decor and good space in the main bedroom and bathroom
  • Space under the beds for suitcase storage
  • Empty mini fridge in the room
  • TV and DVD player by each of the beds
  • Super comfortable duvets
  • Hairdryer
  • Nice large towels provided
  • Good range of lighting options
  • Light up shower head (I'm so easily pleased)
  • Air conditioning in the room
  • free wi-fi
  • Pod style bunk beds, the kids adored these and the styling in the kids room is great too
  • Toiletries provided
What was not so great -
  • Smaller than average dressing table area and bedside units
  • Lack of hanging space in the kids bedroom
  • Metal ladder on the bunk beds, it is not that comfortable under foot
  • It can get really hot in the kids room

Games Port
Off the main reception is the Games Port which is open 10am - 9pm each day, at first I wondered if it really was a bit much to be giving kids computer games on holiday but then I realised it is just like home and as the parent I decide how much they use them. There is a great selection of games available. I liked playing the reaction time one to see if I could beat my own score. The girls were mesmerised by the Wii dance which is cool as that gets them exercising and JJ just liked all of it but especially anything that got him chatting to other friends.

Hotel bar and lobby
The public areas are really nice looking and the big chairs super comfy, they are starting to show signs of wear though within a year of the hotel being open. Prices are similar to elsewhere on resort and we paid about £7.00 for two cappuccinos and a slice of flapjack, so it is not cheap but it was all very good and tasty. There is free wi-fi everywhere in the hotel, so it was nice to just sit and relax for half an hour with a glass of wine while the kids had a play in the games port.

The little extras
You can borrow DVD's, pre-programmed iPods and kindles from reception for the duration of your stay but if you want to, be quick as the kindles all went on the first day. It is a £10 deposit for a DVD (there are lots of good Disney ones to borrow) and £100 for an iPod or Kindle.

It was useful to be able to book for any of the bookable activities straight from our hotel reception and not to have to go to the information point in the Skyline. We found the receptionists to be knowledgeable and helpful when we had any queries or wanted to make bookings.

Deck Restaurant
The Deck is not actually in the hotel but it is where your dining will be if you go for the premium half-board option when you book at the Wave. It is just a short walk but be aware that you will get wet if it is raining! I was genuinely impressed with this restaurant, it is big enough to accommodate all the guests, even on a busy week. They have people to greet you at the door and take you to a free table. The restaurant is open 4pm - 7pm and we tried out most times - 4pm, 5.15pm, 6pm and yes at times it was busy but we were always seated within a few minutes.

Every day there is a carvery, stir fry, fresh cook pasta and grill, fish, vegetarian, kids and meat options. The variety is really very good and the food quality is actually good too. In the past when I have had the regular dining option at Butlins the food had been adequate but the premium dining option changes that to enjoyable I found.

Between the six of us we must have tried every option there was and we found the carvery roast meats especially good. I also really liked a fresh cooked carbonara I had and Mum enjoyed the stuffed jacket potatoes with salad. It was nice to see cheese and biscuits available most days instead of just hot or cold desserts as well.

Breakfast offered a full English, omelettes cooked to order, porridge, cereals, toast, croissant, club sandwiches cooked to order, fruit, yoghurt and as much fruit juice, water and hot drinks as you can manage.

We were really pleased with our stay at the Wave hotel and we would happily stay there again. In truth it is probably more than we could afford to pay but if you had the disposable income available to you then it makes a super upgrade from the normal Butlins accommodation, perhaps for a special occasion? Check out more details and pricing for the Wave on the main Butlins website. Its worth noting that there is nothing wrong with the normal Butlins accommodation though, take a peek of my review of the silver bungalows at Minehead, we were more than happy with those too.

Disclosure: I am a Butlins Ambassador this year and as such we were provided with a 4 night break for 6 people for the purpose of undertaking this review. I have not been told what to write and I remain honest.
